Description
Predictions for the "Canadian Division" as the teams now stand.

#1 (MTL) --This is a bit of a crazy prediction. I may be a bit biased on this one (as a PIT fan) who saw a far superior team beat by a bunch of grinders and a hot goalie but I love the additions this team has made. Add Tiffoli, Extend Gallagher, Allen can take a bunch of starts so a rested Price is a dangerous Price. subtract a not needed, 4th line relegated Domi and add in a "if healthy" power forward in Anderson. this team has potentially 3 2nd lines and 1 3rd line. the big 3 D are great and the others are good enough. they don't have superstars but Suzuki and KK certainly have high ceilings. I love Danault as well and he gives MTL a great 1/2/3 punch down the middle.

#2 (TOR) --Popular opinion is that the leafs got tougher, got a better bottom-6, and improved the D. Brodie is a nice add but I don't like Bogosian there. he could be like TBL, but more likely like BUF buyouts. he may be buoyed but I doubt it as he won't have a star beside him on the 3rd pairing and the forwards in front of him aren't pretty (bottom-6). Speaking of said bottom-6....the leafs REPLACED kyle Clifford with Wayne Simmons. NOT tougher. Clifford is strictly a stiff grinder. Simmons is a "has been a power forward with goals". not anymore, this isn't 2016 people. no one should be scared of Simmons anymore. he's old and washed up IMHO. having 4 decent (emphasis decent) goalies can't hurt but they are an injury away from a mix of Campbell/dell/hutchinson playing against McDavid, Draisaitl, Pettersson, Connor, Scheifele, wheeler, gaudreau, Monaghan, etc...

#3 (EDM) --once again a team that will try to outscore mistakes. that works in the regular season to some extent (see Toronto) and by that I mean it might get them playoffs but it won't get them 2nd round hockey. too top heavy. I don't like their goaltending at all. they could slip further down.

#4 (CGY) --This team continues to look good on paper and continues to underwhelm with mediocre playoff letdowns. I'm sick of predicting they'll finish top-3. even with Markstrom and tanev IDK if they can turn a corner. The stars have to shine.

#5 (WPG) --This ranking could change based on a potential Laine swap BUT for now, the top-6 is great, the Goalie is great, but the defense is ok at best. I like the add of Stastny but I wonder about their depth.

#6 (VAN) --This is the young team that could have taken a huge step forward with the right moves. but the "right moves'' were nowhere to be found. Holtby has regressed big time after the cup win in 2018. IDK if demko is legit or not. Tanev played with Hughes. who does now that he's gone? Tiffoli was such a great add for them and now he's gone. the young players may take another developmental year. I'm sorry to predict a low finish for them. I really like their young core.

#7 (OTT) --aside from seemingly overpaying alot of people recently (murray, c. brown, white) I like the pieces they added from the draft. they will stink but not as bad as some think probably. I wonder why they added Dadonov. I don't really see them contending in the next 3 years...why not overpay for he or Hoffman on a 1 yr. deal to flip them at the deadline??? I hope Murray can rebound and find himself again--just not when playing us (PIT).

This isn't bold at all tbh. Your reasoning is solid. though I personally would have edm a bit lower and vancouver a bit higher. good work.

I said bold bc I thought others might see it as such. I don't really think so...
thanks. IK right it's so hard. most likely something crazy will happen. I could have put CGY above EDM they were close--also VAN over WPG...
thanks.
Im working on the other divisions.

Who did Vancouver lose really ? Markstrom but Demko can pick up the load and Holtby might bounce back. They added Schmidt because they were missing a partner for Hughes. Boeser should be healthy. I don’t see them taking a step back

I feel like Toronto will be Number 1, just in the defence upgrades, but idk if that forward core will preform as they have the last 3 years.
I could definitely see Montreal Being Number 2, but Winnipeg got stronger in the offseason(and they could get Hamonic), Calgary aswell could be 2, so could Vancouver. I think Calgary will be 2
3 I think will belong to Montreal, I feel like Suzuki And Toffoli will be a killer 1st line, Anderson idk. Definitely a playoff team now
4 Goes to Winnipeg, Stastny definitely still has something in him. If he plays on a line with Ehlers and Laine, look out, Winnipeg definitely has the best top 6 in the League.
5 definitely goes to Vancouver, yeah they lost all 3 of there main Free Agents, but if Elias Goes off and Quinn has a crazy 2nd season, I think it will help some of the wounds, Schmidt is a very strong Addition, Holtby though idk,
6, Ottawa, this is bold from me, but I think the addition of Dadanov and Murray is key, Brown and Tierney are on cheap deals, Norris looks nhl ready, Ottawa will be a fun team
7 Edmonton, oh boy EDM, Paying 2 Seconds for like 10 games of Athanisiou....yikes, they didn’t sign a Big Free Agent to help McDavid and Leon, and Klefbom is out potentially the whole season, and that Goalie Tandem is REALLY Questionable.

Simmonds is as tough as Clifford, what? Clifford was on the ice when Spezza dropped the gloves to get the team going. Clifford was effectively a pylon for us, didn't lead anybody, had like one memorable fight in the regular season, if I recall.

Simmonds is older, he's a leader, and he is definitely tougher than Clifford lmao (and with a scoring touch too, even at 32). He had 24 points to clifford's 14, drew (and took) more penalties, has more blocks, more hits, less hits taken. He has more ice time granted, but it's because simmonds is simply a better player (keeping in mind he's had lots of rest)

Also, Vesey and Thornton are a hell of a lot bigger/tougher than Gauthier (was effectively a butterfly) and Johnsson/Kapanen.

Also, the leafs are an injury away from needing to rely on goalies 2-4...? Um, yeah, Tampa was an injury away from relying on McElhinney. How is this an indictment of a teams depth? Andersen is a proven elite starter, Campbell has proven to be fantastic as a backup, Dell even has 100+ games of experience, as does hutch (who was good in bursts last year and this year with Colorado). Any single team is a 'single injury away' from playing their backup goalie, lmao

I get what ur saying for sure, but when Anderson's been hurt the team hasn't looked pretty.
I still think Thornton/vesey/simmons aren't any more than 4th line stiffs. I don't think they will turn this team into a bunch of Tampa bottom-6 grinders.

1. MTL : Deep roster all around.
2. WPG: Best top 6. Improved the Dcore (Demelo and Pionk... Hamonic? ) and good rookies coming. Vezina winning goalie.
3. TOR : Going to miss secondary scoring. Half the bottom 6 should be retired. Dcore isn’t deep. Goaltending's average. But hey, it isn't playoffs, so they will win their fair share with PP production.
4. CGY : Tanev and Markstrom are great additions. Don't like their offence depth though.
5. VAN : Set back at every position, until Schmidt and Hotlby rebound and prove me wrong.
6. EDM : The Dcore is coming along. No significative improvment on offence, bad between pipes.
7. OTT: Come on now. Seriously. Give'em 2-3 years.

in the playoffs? yeah. but idk. both teams have added some solid pieces. flames are going to be dependent on contributions from gaudreau and monahan. oilers could have won the offseason if they acquired a better goalie, because their moves upfront were extremely good. barrie and turris are huge adds.
