Leafs 2023 2024 Season Discussion Part 2
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Leafsfan98</b></div><div>https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=54VzNjN1uOk
After missing out on Z, do the Leafs go after Xhekaj? George Laraque (who works out with Xhekaj) supposedly said he doesn't see Xhekaj finishing the season out as a Hab after St Louis ripped into him for being too aggressive... Do the Leafs capitalize on this?
He would fit like a glove and is cost controlled and shouldn't be THAT much</div></div>
if he's available and not outrageously overpriced on the trade market hell yea. Would be nice to get a bruiser D that is young enough to be impactful for a few years.
On the flip side, if you're getting demoted by the 2023-24 Habs, maybe there are a few too many holes in your game... would have to look into that more before giving a definitive yes

Jarnkrok deal would be done in the last year of his contract when he's like 34 - I think that's reasonable. Kampf is great for his role, but a 2.4M 4C, even if he has interest, won't go for more than a 3rd or 4th.
Minten - I absolutely agree, but sometimes things don't go as planned - if he can play of course you use either Domi/Gourde's money elsewhere and bring him up but I'm just operating under the assumption that one of him or Cowan doesn't make it to be safe because sh*t happens with prospects
I think this is the year (2025-26) where the Leafs cap situation is such that the window to go all in really really opens up over 2025-26, 26-27, 27-28

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>JG1972</b></div><div>JT will be 35 when his contract is over. i rly don’t think he’s gonna sign for 8 yrs lol</div></div>
rationale is this:
Assuming he's still producing 60-80 point range, he'll be technically in order for a Giroux comparable contract of 6.5Mx3 - him being likely willing to take a discount would bump it down a bit, but the cap going up so much likely bumps it up again. I'm calling it a 7Mx3yrs contract
The Leafs major contention window is really only until the 2027-28 season, the last year of the Matthews deal. I'd rather spread out JT's cap hit over a ridiculous term and pay him the same money than give him a shorter term, higher AAV deal given the constraints we're under and the emphasis being entirely on the short term. Then if the Leafs end up rebuilding after the Matthews deal, having JT around as a leader for 3M, especially as the cap rises, isn't such a big deal.
But yes, I understand the concern.

Lets be honest if Engvall and Mikheyev were still leafs or if they had kept Acciari and Lafferty he would be doing much better
Gregor and McMann have worked but they are not the guys above. Than you had Reaves dragging him down a bit as we overused that guy. Should be in and out like every other team was doing lul. And as soon as they did it, guess what it worked lul. Heck even when he came back wasnt a headache
To me the big mistake was moving Lafferty as he and Kampf were developing strong chemistry especially R2 of the playoffs.
Either way I think if they can just surround him with 2 nice pieces it will be fine and there are some options
Been suggesting along with Hanafin to try and get Greer whose got 4 goals and assists rn on CGY 4th line
Gregor-Kampf-Greer could be very interesting</div></div>
not arguing that but like I wanna be spending 3-3.5M total on the 4th line not giving one guy alone 2.4M

I think they got something and while sample has been small both Robertson and McMann have looked like nice bottom 6 pieces
Robertson 2 goals and assists in 4gp and he and Domi chefs kiss they look perfect together
McMann 2 assists in first game of season and made Kampf come alive.
<strong>Scoring has really not been an issue for this team</strong> its been defense. Dont get me wrong would love Kane but adding him could mess up the chemistry we may have finally achieved.</div></div>
Maybe you don't understand the severity of the issue before this 2-4 game little hot streak of depth scoring, literally 70%+ of the goals were coming from Matthews and Nylander alone
If Kane is signing somewhere within the next week or so and wants to come here for cheap, there hasn't been enough of a sample size to trust the depth so greatly to say that you wouldn't be adding Kane (57 points in 73 games last year, 92 points in 78 games the year before)

I know, but one little hot streak vs. a fundamental issue this team has had both earlier this year and for at least 4-5 years now has been depth scoring, and Kane massively helps that. There's over 60 games left to figure out the chemistry.

1st line looks good
2nd line looks good
3rd line has been pretty good. Robertson has just been a solid piece there with Domi and Jarnkrok
4th line is now playable and McMann looked comfortable
I dont want to touch anything and potentially mess things up. As while it was a 1 game sample we finally had 4 lines that looked like they could do something.
Now if they had continued to have issues with depth scoring would have went yep hes perfect but McMann and Robertson seem to have made a positive impact and I dont want to take em out yet.
As for the CGY trade yea that probs could be it maybe not who knows. Probs could get away with sending Holmberg over Niemela like we saw with STL where no stellar prospect went for ROR</div></div>
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Kinger25</b></div><div>But I’m not sure if the leafs want Kane the forwards are rocking why mess with that</div></div>
like 2-3 games of the forwards actually scoring outside of the big 3 and you'd pass up on the chance to integrate Patrick Kane into that mix? I sure wouldn't. Addition or not I can almost guarantee today's lines won't be Game 1's lines.

nah. He's solid but I don't see a path for him to be a majorly impactful player until earliest the last year or two of our contention window (ie. the Matthews contract), may as well use him as trade bait

and trickle down kinda does solve some F issues. Means you'd have one of Matthews, Nylander, Marner, or Kane on any top 9 line helping depth scoring considerably, also allows you to run Gregor - Kampf - Jarnkrok 4th line which is pretty much as deep of a forward core you can ask for. And would be so sick

fair point, but I let him walk for anything over 11.5M no hesitation. If he also just wants a 4 year deal, fine by me. Just because he got paid too much on his last deal doesn't mean he gets a crazy raise on this one. Matthews is a different beast, of course his contract will be more. bro makes Barrie look like Jaccob Slavin defensively. It's that bad. Can't be spending 4M on someone you need to shelter on the 3rd pair.
