Montreal gets a 1st round pick to help their rebuild. Trade away a pending UFA and still have a chance to resign him in FA

Winnipeg gets the best UFA center available to help with their playoff run. They have a very good prospect core so they can afford to trade a first. Get a 40-50 PT center who's young enough that they can resign long term if they'd like

Fair deal, WInnipeg adds a needed center and rounds out their top 9, Montreal gets a 1st for an expiring contract (and someone who they took on as a cap dump with a 1st previosuly so amazing asset management)

And thus Kent Hughes completes what might be an unprecedented two-step of transactions, getting paid a 1st to take a player and then reselling that player for another 1st. Shoutout to Brad Treliving, we couldn’t have done it without you.

Anyway, fair deal. Monahan should be a good addition to the Jets roster, and people who are complaining about his EV points will likely be surprised by his output with better wingers.

Well, well, well, look at what an unretained Monahan brought in, an unprotected, unconditional first round pick and a 3rd (If they win the cup).

Like every other trade around deadline day, it's a wait-and-see. Monahan is on pace for roughly 60 points and 20 goals which isn't cheap in the trade market. If the Jets go on a run then this is an absolute win, and if they fall on their faces then it's a bad trade.

It's a fair deal in my opinion (maybe slightly more on the Montreal side) but I don't think this is a blatant overpay.

Also, never forget that Montreal got two firsts for Monahan. One for taking him, and one for trading him away.

Voted for a Fair deal as this is as fair as it could be, but lets go back to the CGY - MTL trade of Monahan + 1st VS Futur Considerations and switch the vote to : "MTL highway robbery"
