The difference between the Boston pick and NJ's is not worth Pinto... at all.
This probably gets you hung up on.

Next year with Big Changes
If you think the value is a 2nd and a 3rd then make the trade for a 2nd and a 3rd...?
Either way I dont actually think the Sens would be interested

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>JLance</b></div><div>Thanks for the response and insight. I see Joker not as a garbage dump, but as an extra player the Sabres shouldn't be paying his worth. He's now a luxury item that can be played on lines 2 and 3 (1 in a tight pinch) but the value in him now is the trade return. There's plenty of teams looking for team controllable RHD's so there's probably many options here.</div></div>
Serviceable wasnt meant to be a slight!! He'd easily be the second best RD on the team and carries value 100%, most definitely not a cap dump and Ottawa should be interested

Tomasino is a nice piece, cant imagine the Sens would be interested in Del Gaizo but either way I'm sure they'd rather just make the pick.

I'm not sold on Carolina making the finals but even if they did the Car 1st would **12 spots higher than the Philly 2nd, either way the value on the deal would still need to be adjusted.

The problem with Boucher is exactly what you said, what is his value? Much like Norris I think the injury history and fact theyve consistently been out of the lineup the last 4 years makes it difficult to move them for what theyre likely worth. Also much like the Norris situation because of the depreciated value Ottawa would likely be best served by keeping the player and hoping they can get healthy.
If he was to be moved I think that Joki is a serviceable right shot D which is something the team is looking for. Curious to see what other Sens fans say, I dont hate it but I would prefer to keep Boucher.

Marner
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Claesson4Norris</b></div><div>Ottawa needs to stop punting these high picks</div></div>
I completely agree, if we could undo Duchene, DeBrincat and Chychrun to keep the picks... 4th in '19 couldve been Seider, 7th in '22 couldve been Mintyukov or Geekie, 12th last year couldve been Benson.
But unlike all of those trades I think Marner represents the best player by a mile and in this scenario he would also come with an extension which would negate what we saw with the other 3 where we watched them get flipped back out (pending Chychrun) for less a year later after no extension was ever put in place.
It would make the cap scenario extremely difficult but I think a 20-30G 80-100P player in the middle of his prime would guarantee playoffs and put them immediately into a window of contention. Norris could be flipped back out, G may be willing to re-sign for less. If the extension could be for 11-11.5m it may very well be worth the headache.

A big swing for next year
The Sens wont be looking for equal value to what they gave up for Chychrun but that offer is too far off.
Jospeh is a good 3LD/7thD but Nieto would be redundant with the depth Ottawa already has on the left. Smith without retention is basically a cap dump and the fact one of the 2nds isnt for another two drafts after this one... definitely a no go. I know in this scenario you sent the 1st for Swayman but I dont think there is a deal to be had with Ottawa if that 1st isnt going their way.

Genuinely intriguing from an Ottawa perspective
Also feel like Toronto would want the '24 1st instead of the '25

There is no McDavid on the Habs roster but even if there was you have to admit that this is nowhere near the best possible offer and definitely not an overpay.
Would you trade Suzuki for that?

What We Expect
Two late 2nds for Chychrun would be significantly worse than the DeBrincat or Duchene returns when they were both flipped back out.
Theres no way Staios cant squeeze a 1st out of somebody. Or at the very least dont take the two worst 2nds of the three the team has...

Chychrun likely signs for a good chunk less than Chabby's 8m, he's a year younger as well. One of them needs to go for sure and Chych is a year younger.
Might be a toss up between the two.

Does Ottawa want to get their draft pick guy
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>KentMcNally</b></div><div>After I posted I also considered editing the trade and having Montreal add their 2nd round pick from Colorado (which would be a late second) to offset some of what Ottawa is getting. Not sure if that would be enough or not.
As one person said above, sometimes teams get really focused on getting "their guy", so maybe Ottawa would do such a trade. The late first round pick that Ottawa has from Boston is nice to have (for Montreal or Ottawa), but given the draft is not tremendously deep, maybe Ottawa would do it to get who they want and not lose that player to Arizona/Utah.</div></div>
Yeah I understand what youre trying to get at but I think youre off in terms of value.
Picks generally dont change hands that much in the top 10-15 because the value of the players tend to be so similar but I found a couple from recent drafts. In 2022 Arizona gave picks up picks 34 and 45 to move up 16 places from 27 to 11. In 2019 Arzona gave up pick 45 to move 4 places from 15 to 11. In 2016 Ottawa gave up pick 80 to go from 12 to 11.
But as mentioned above the last time a trade happened that would be similar to this was in 2008. Nashville got picks 37 and 68 to go back two spots from 5 to 7 then got pick 40 to go back again from 7 to 9.
So it is possible that 5 and 7 could be swapped but if anything it would be for a 2nd or maybe along with a 3rd as well.
