Montreal Canadiens signed Lane Hutson (3 Years / $1,333,333 AAV)
At last, the weird worrying that he might not sign in Montreal even though there’s never been the slightest indication that was an issue can stop.
Expectations for what he’ll do in the Detroit games are probably going to be way too high, but I’m excited to see him in uniform.

(SJS/VGK) - Hertl, 2025 3rd (SJS), 2027 3rd (SJS) for Edstrom, 2025 1st (VGK)
Fair deal. Hertl is much more useful to Vegas than to San Jose, and San Jose gets a few decent assets and, even more importantly, some much-needed cap space for the next six seasons. Grier has had to do a lot of work to create room after Wilson left the team with such an awful Capfriendly page.

(MTL/NJD) - Allen for 2025 3rd (NJD)
Allen doesn’t get enough credit given how poor our defence has been. He’ll hopefully do better in Jersey.
A 3rd is a perfectly decent return for a goalie.

2023-2024 NHL Discussion Thread #4: Deadline is Approaching
So unless Vegas wins a round (granted, I wouldn't bet against that), Calgary gets less for Hanifin in terms of picks than the Habs paid the Avalanche for Alex Newhook, somehow.
I'm starting to think Conroy is bad at trades.

If 2019 followed Bob Mackenzie Who Is Happy
I doubt Detroit would be neutral at Cozens over Zegras; the latter is a 1D prospect, and they went off-board to pick him IRL.

For the purpose of this exercise, all he has to prove is that he's better than Turcotte, and he's done that.

Sacrifice some money go have a strong playoffs and win a cup then someone will sign u to another deal anyways
1m x 1 year with one of the teams I mentioned then go do well post season get cup and in offseason 3m deal could happen with ANA or something look what they pay these cup guys
As winning a cup be better than the money as not everyone gets the chance to have it. Lots of players make good money few get to lift Lord Stanley</div></div>
Johansen is due $8 million for next season on his current deal.

Great move for Colorado to hopefully nail down a position of weakness post-Kadri.
Not sure about this for the Sabres, Byram isn’t really filling an obvious position of need, however talented he is.

Will be interesting. As to me get the deal terminated and go sign with another contender

LOL, what?
Johansen would be crazy to give up all that money.

The discussions around Walker being worth a 1st seemed fanciful to me, but when that’s paired with ditching the Johansen contract, fair deal.

Vancouver Canucks signed Elias Pettersson (8 Years / $11,600,000 AAV)
The moral of the story is that bullying works.
A very good signing; I still don't understand why Canucks management felt the need to play urgent hardball here, though.

Depends on your definition of availability, since anyone is technically available, but among the UFA class on seller teams, he’s certainly up there.

And thus Kent Hughes completes what might be an unprecedented two-step of transactions, getting paid a 1st to take a player and then reselling that player for another 1st. Shoutout to Brad Treliving, we couldn’t have done it without you.
Anyway, fair deal. Monahan should be a good addition to the Jets roster, and people who are complaining about his EV points will likely be surprised by his output with better wingers.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>justinhollfan3</b></div><div>Brz and a first for a ufa center? not to mention kuzmenko? i dont even know lol this seems lopsided to me</div></div>
From the Canucks' perspective, Kuzmenko is essentially being cap-dumped and it's unclear whether he can recover anything like his form from last year. That being the case, I don't think it's an overpay.
I say fair deal. Vancouver gets an extremely high end 2C for their Cup run, Calgary gets some nice assets for a departing player.

I’m glad that the Avalanche backed off their reported concerns about term.
It doesn’t make sense for them to worry much about going long with Toews when most of their core other than Makar is comparable to him in age. This team is a Cup contender right now, that’s what matters.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Ste_Catherine_Street</b></div><div>Yea, very true. Barron has to prove he's better than Kovacevic this year, at a minimum. Harris/Barron need to solidify their top4 potential before its too late.</div></div>
Romanov is a left D, his being traded had nothing to do with Barron.

Uh, what? A 2nd in two years is just that, a 2nd in two years. That’s like arguing a 1st in four years is worth as much as a 4th today.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>turtlemountain</b></div><div>Montreal uses a retention spot on this though. Don’t really understand wasting 2 years of retention for such a marginal return.</div></div>
We got a 2nd already as part of the larger transaction and it doesn’t make sense for us to keep him, because we need the roster spot for younger players.

I’m surprised that two years’ retention didn’t get a bit more than that in trade, but conversely it really didn’t make any sense for us to have him taking up a roster spot while waiting for the ideal trade. The younger players need minutes.
I’m sure playing for his hometown team is a great development for Jeff and his family, so best of luck.

This is obviously not on Dubas, but rather on Hextall, but all the same: the two Petry trades are, taken together, a massive loss for Pittsburgh. Montreal got assets for Petry (+ a guy that Pittsburgh opted not to re-sign), then got paid to take him back with partial salary retention so that they can (probably) trade him again for more assets.

Anaheim Ducks signed Leo Carlsson (3 Years / $4,200,000 AAV)
But is it <em>really</em> a good idea to sign your young high draft picks? Hmm...
As far as where he goes, Carlsson is physically ready for the NHL and plays against men in the SHL. I would say give him his 9 games and if he's doing okay roll with it.
