Maccelli is only 22 and is at 1.97 pts per 60 at 5 on 5 and his primary assist rate is solid. Also has good underlying numbers. He’ll likely be a 15-20 G 45-50 A two way winger in his prime. Pretty good for a 4th rd pick.

By the time their young guys are real impact players Schmaltz will be long gone.

Schmaltz is a 2nd line complementary winger. Pretty sure they’ll find a way to replace him.

Chychrun is a ufa in 2 years. If he was signed for 4+ years at this AAV , I’d agree, amazing trade. But I don’t like giving up a top prospect when the guy you’re getting is close to ufa

Him being a UFA in 2 years shouldn't affect much, that's still 2 years of amazing contract value and then LA's would be foolish not to extend him ( they'll certainly be able too, Kopitar's deal expires a year before )

Personally I'd want Nemec to cook in the AHL for another year.
Did wonders for Hughes to get two years of development before joining the team, and Nemec's ELC gets to slide another year to. That could be huge for the Devils in 2024 - 2027.
Besides, one of Walsh, Okhotiuk or Bahl should be more than ready to cover on the third pair for one season, they are all pretty much ready for the NHL right now.

Gonna be tough to integrate both Nemec and Hughes at the same time. I think the former is 2 years away.

Building through the draft - at least in the lens of your observation - seems to be such a baseline for each team that it can no longer be viewed as a key for modern-day NHL success. It's so damn important that every team needs to be doing it. The addition of auxiliary pieces looks much more crucial. Both LA and NY are attractive places for UFAs to play even when taxes are considered.

Both the Kings and Rangers held onto their old cores. The Leafs went full nuclear and the Oilers never really had any NHL talent besides their own drafted prospects from about 2009 until maybe 2 summers ago?

A lot of attention is paid to drafting and developing talent but I don't think a big enough deal is made regarding insulating that talent once it's NHL-ready. Even the Bolts didn't win a cup until their rebuild-sourced prospects were NHL veterans and names like Kucherov and Point weren't required to be polebearers for the franchise until they smashed through the glass ceiling.
