The biggest difference for me is Yzerman's supporting cast. He had BriesBois, Verbeek, their god-level amateur scouting and development staff, Stacey Roest, etc. In Detroit literally 99% of their hockey ops positions are former Red Wings who got the job from Ken Holland after their career ended. He's added 1 front office job (Lidstrom), and that's someone who lives and works in Sweden. And he hired his own brother as a pro scout.
GMs always get too much credit for being good and too much blame for being bad. You need good people in your hockey ops department.
Great point. Woof Detroit is the definition of the Old Boys Club. The Yzerplan is looking really confusing right now
BUT I think another factor is having to live in Florida vs Michigan. Almost everyone would pick Florida over Michigan due to the warm weather, beaches and no state income tax. Hell if I made 100k after taxes and had to pick between living in either state I pick Florida 10/10 days
If Yzerman was willing to pay to move Walman fast even though he's a nice 2nd pair guy this screams that he has a big move in mind and when we look at FA 2 names pop up
Detroit has probably 3 defensemen that this move would have made more sense for. I don’t understand how they couldn’t convince San Jose to take Holl or Petry instead of the guy who’s been Seiders partner for the last 2 years

Wtf is this. I am baffled. The world does not make sense. How does a D as good as Walman even need to get dumped? How did nobody step up to take him for FC??? HOW THE HELL DID SAN JOSE GET A 2nd just TO TAKE HIM ON?????????
Unless Yzerman got a handshake that keeps SJ from taking at #14 who he wants at #15, this is shambolic. So dumb. And I'm asking myself why the Blues didn't receive this gift, seeing as how we've given them some recently. What an a-hole.
I give up with these NHL GM's man......Just another day where an actual GM does the compete opposite of the collective CF brain trust.
Just another reminder that when someone on here proposes a trade that you think "No way "X" Gm does that /laughs and hangs up", just know there is at least one NHL GM probably thinking that its a good trade.

They wouldn't have to do a handshake on that. They could have just included the swap of those two draft picks in the trade instead of future considerations. Then it would have made a little more sense.
If we see Detroit fleece the Rangers at some point this week, cue the conspiracy theorists about a roundabout compensation for the Goodrow "waivers."
Think about it.
1. New York "trades" Goodrow to San Jose via waivers, and the Sharks get future considerations for taking on the cap dump.
2. Detroit provides compensation to San Jose in the form of Walman and a 2nd.
3. New York provides compensation to Detroit to reimburse them for covering up their NTC workaround.
