Its a valid question, but Steve has made it pretty clear since about year 2 of his tenure that he wants everyone to earn their spot. And more depth on the blue line is never a bad thing.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>draft_em_sign_em_trade_em</b></div><div>Double that retain amount would have cost the Pens T. Smith or O. Pickering, triple the retain amount and Pens would have added a conditional 2nd Rd pick (with upgrade to a 1st Rd'er)
So yes, SJS lost the trade, but the owners stood firm on not paying EK65 %25 to %33 of his salary for 4 years to play elsewhere.</div></div>
Which SJ ownership is well within their rights to do, but its not like the Sharks are going to be competitive anytime soon. So did they really need the cap space that they got 2 years down the road for retaining less?
As always, it may have just come down to dollars and cents. I agree that SJ probably "loses" this deal, but considering the bounds that Grier had to play in and how little leverage he actually had, I'd say he did alright.

I'd call this a fair deal for all parties involved.
While SJ definitely didn't win this trade, I think they made out okay considering how little they retained and how little leverage they probably had. Pitt and MTL move some bad deals out and some impact players in and don't really give up anything of long term value to do so.
I still question what SJ could have gotten had they been willing to eat more of EK's salary, but for all we know the return might not have been worthwhile to do so and instead they just took the future cap space.

Detroit’s present and future options for the #2C: Copp, Compher, Kasper and Danielson. From scouting reports they are all solid 2-way centers defensively responsible but they won’t put up a lot of points in the NHL.</div></div>
I guess I can see his logic from the perspective of if you can play center, you can probably play wing just fine. After the lean years we've had down the middle recently, it may not be a bad approach to have 4 or 5 guys who can fill that role.

I wish him well, but having watched him the past couple years I think he pretty much is what he is.
That said playing on the other side of the country on a team where he wasn't a top 10 pick will only do good things for him

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>NDoody</b></div><div>Those numbers are true, but Vets like Copp/Compher/Chaiarot are not horribly long-term, they will help the prospects, and you could move those without to much trouble when the cap goes up and prospects are ready to take rolls.
Debrincat wants 8 years which is a different story. You absolutely would have to get him for less than Larkin, but also you take in mind deals coming like Raymond & Seider. Are those guys going to be willing to deal in the 8's if they see Debincat at $8 per ? I think Stevey is smart to try and shorten the term and dollar amount. The highest I would go with him is 8 x $8, which is what the sens supposedly offered him and he wasn't interested.</div></div>
If he turned down 8 X 8 from OTT with the understanding that he'd get moved to Detroit, then yeah that's gonna be a no for me, dog. He ain't gonna get that Timo deal

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>NDoody</b></div><div>From what I have seen online the best Sens could do is Berggen and Bostons 2024 1st. The hold-up is that Debrincat won't agree to the contract that Wings want to give him.
His original ask was 8 x $9M which no one is doing right now, I saw a couple of mentions the Wing's offer to him is 5 x $7M and Debrincat has refused to sign that blocking a deal that would have been done at noon EST when Zadina cleared waivers.
I understand he has a newborn and wants to make the most he can for his family but it just isn't there for him right now with the cap situation, he has to come down on his asking price.</div></div>
Bingo, but Yzerman also needs to be willing to open up his pockets a little bit. He's paying 15+ mil for Copp/Compher/Chiarot. 8-8.5 mil for a guy who would have been second on the team in goais in a DOWN year isn't totally outlandish. I think its going to be fill or kill at 8 X 8-8.25

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>MoSeider53</b></div><div>Nope Detroit isn't moving their 2024 1st round pick for DeBrincat.
According to Elliotte Friedman, Detroit has a deal in place for DeBrincat. But it's contingent that we can get him signed long term. DeBrincat wants at least 8 x $8,500,000 from Detroit but Yzerman will only do 5-6 years $7,500,000 per so it sounds like it could be dead if they don't come to some kind of agreement.</div></div>
That tracks with what I've seen too. I think its going to be kill or fill at 8 x 8 or maybe 8.25.

Ugh, god those deals/players are so mid. I'm willing to reserve final judgement on Copper because he was recovering from a core muscle injury and looked much better in the second half of the season. But yeah not in love with either of those deals. 15+ mil for those two and Chiarot doesn't look good.

I think its fair to say we're all just ready for this to be done. Either that or for Ottawa to just sign him to his QO so that the world can move on.

Maybe, though I think everyone in Detroit is overvaluing Bergy a bit. He's a nice player who showed lots of poise last year, but he's not a 30G/60P guy. More of a middle sixer setup man.

Hey look, a realistic return for Cat. I think OTT may even get a little more than this, but its hard to really say because of how little leverage they have and how funky the market is thanks to the flat cap.

Sens Cat trade
Sens have next to no leverage here. Cat has made it clear he's only really interested in going to Detroit and the Wings are one of the few teams that have the cap space to give him the sort of deal he wants. The return Ottawa is going to get for him is likely going to be underwhelming. Probably a little less than the PLD deal (I.E. a 2nd, Bergy, and a B level prospect)

(EDM/DET) - Kostin, Yamamoto for Future considerations
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Hollands_missing_brain</b></div><div>I won't go as far as to say he is the most overrated GM bc he has built a rather good farm system and all of his 1st rd drafts have been hitting, with the anticipation of edvinsson coming up this year and possibly Kasper. His picks don't bother me bc he was crucified for seider at the time so I'll give him benefit there. But I will admit that if you look at his recent transgressions they are not W's like previously thought. Trade for Ned was great... for all of one year. Vrana trade was great... for all of one year. Yama trade was "interesting"... for all of one day.
Don't get me started on his draft night interview claiming to still be in a rebuild. I just hope it's all camera fluff and he's doing some voodoo stuff in the background.</div></div>
Anyone who's posting on this site regularly is pretty glued in to what's going on in the hockey world right now. And not 1 person can explain what the heck the point of this was. It's absolutely perplexing. I wasn't thrilled with that draft interview either.
I know Steve has a lot of runway here, but at some point this team needs to take off.

I'd forgotten about that. Too bad, we're thin at RD.
And yes I agree, hence my secondary comments. My wet dream would be a blockbuster with Winnipeg for both the Connors and one of their defensemen. That is unless Yzerman really wants to keep stockpiling picks.
