PLD Kakko Necas and UFAs
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>rb1481</b></div><div>So which is it? An overpay, or the picks/players arent what they would want? You can’t say both, you contradict your own statement</div></div>
It's an overpay, Montreal should not offer this much in a package for any one player that isn't a superstar. If offered this package, I still think the Canes decline because it's not what they would be looking for in a return for Necas. Those are not contradictory statements, they are complimentary. Teams don't trade players in a vacuum, and in Carolina's case they are contending and don't want to sell their players for futures.
If a team offered their next four firsts for Cole Caufield, far more than he is worth, Kent Hughes would probably decline because they are trying to exit their rebuild and futures would set them back.

Overpay for Necas, but the young players aren't particularly interesting to the Canes and mid-late firsts really aren't what they would want as a return.

What I would do
Lassi Thompson could be had for free last year - and he was taken by the Ducks, who then didn't find him good enough to keep. Why would Utah spend a 3rd on that?

Very Aggressive Offseason
I would take that and you can probably drop the 2nd and/or protect the first - but only if Necas wants to sign a larger contract than the one you've given him here. If that's what he signs for, I'd prefer to keep him with the Canes.

Guentzel Jarvis Necas
Guentzel might be able to get 10 million, but I doubt it will be the Canes that give it to him. I doubt Fast waives his NMC for Utah, but if you get Guentzel's number lower, you can certainly keep him. The term for both Jarvis and Necas seems short for the AAV, although with arb rights Necas could conceivably do that if he thinks he'll get more as a UFA. I would prefer a veteran LHD to pair with Morrow, but I can see a world where he is put on the second pair to be assisted by Orlov and Chatfield stays third pair with Harris (or whoever). I'm not sure Blake or Gunler are particularly ready, but they could certainly surprise out of training camp. There's also the potential ~4 million in cap savings of a KK buyout (or more if he is traded), but that seems not super likely.
All in all, good job! I'm being pretty nitpicky, but I agree that the "Canes can't keep Necas" narrative is overblown unless he is asking for ~8 million a year.

Trading up with Marky
Regardless of ownership's stance on retention, you can only retain on 3 contracts meaning at least one of those firsts has to be 2025 as the trade would happen after the draft.

Capitals 202425
Dowd has value, just not to the Canes - they are flush with bottom 6 centers. I've seen a couple Jensen for Necas trades and while I don't love it, I don't hate it either. Ideally they get a first and prospect if a team is only offering futures.
If I were to trade Necas (my preference would be to keep him but if his contract ask is 8.25 million then he's gone), I would want either a replacement top6 RW, or a top4 RD. Depending on who was available/ how much term/ their cap/ their age, I could see picks going either way.

Necas trade
If Necas is traded for a defenseman I hope it is for a righty not a lefty. There's also no way the Canes pay Guentzel 10/year for 8 years, so if that is his asking price they will just let him walk and re-sign Necas with that money.

Change In the House of the Sharks
Kuznetzov would probably be traded to be bought out, after July 1st when the signing bonus is paid so it is only 4 million in real dollars over 2 years. Marleau @ 6 million was a first, Bailey at 5 million was a second, so Kuznetsov at 4 could be a third?

I like Chinakhov, but the Orlov-Boqvist swap is pretty unnecessary. Boqvist is just "we have Tony DeAngelo at home".

I think the contract asks would have to be reversed, or at the very least both asking for 7.5 for the Canes to accept. They should just keep Necas if he signs for that price

Keep Guentzel and Trade Necas
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>SlafCaufZuki</b></div><div>My logic here was that Harris plays like a veteran. He's not flashy, but he almost never does mistakes and he's smart. He's also a great community guy and he's very eloquent. He seems as someone who's a good fit with their core. I signed Martinez in case he doesn't gel well with Morrow.
You can keep both of them if you don't re-sign Turbo and you buyout KK,, but the cap would be extremely tight. This allows you to be more flexible cap-wise and it would give the Canes room to use their draft capital to improve up front at the deadline.
What would be a fair trade for Necas from the Habs then? 1st + Mesar + Harris?? I know Necas isn't worth the moon either but he's a young productive player so he's definitely worth way more than a first.</div></div>
Necas' trade value is somewhere between Reinhart and Fiala (1st and good prospect), with the caveat that neither situation is particularly comparable. Buffalo trading Reinhart was a reset to their rebuild, and Minnesota was gaining 14 million in dead cap. The most likely scenario that Necas gets traded - in my opinion - is if he is packaged with picks for a replacement with term/team control, or a top 4 RHD to fill in after Burns retires. For these reasons the Canadiens aren't great trade partners; they aren't going to trade their young guys, their window is about to open.
I think the Canes front office has a number they are willing to give Guentzel, my guess is it starts with an 8, and probably for 5-6 years. He'll likely walk - see Trocheck, or Hamilton, and then they will have plenty of space to re-sign Necas if they so choose.

Keep Guentzel and Trade Necas
The two first is too much for Necas, he's not worth that - and the players would be of no interest to the Canes. I'm sure Harris is a capable LD, I'd rather pair a more veteran defender with Morrow while he gets adjusted to the pro game. I'm also not sure why the choices are keep Guentzel or trade Necas, when you can let turbo walk and keep the younger more dynamic player. Or bridge Jarvis, see if Guentzel takes less, and try to keep all 3.

Buffalo isn't trading Tuch unless it's an extreme overpay, he'll likely wear an A or potentially the C next year and is an important leader for the team.
