I was going to say it was only okay as they walked him to UFA. But he is still an RFA? Newhook's agent sucks. He should have only accepted this AAV on a bridge. Good on Montreal.
What's the downside here? Does anyone think he won't be at LEAST a 3 lw? Because that's a bit on the high end, but not unreasonable for 3 lw. That's a good price for 3c. That's excellent for anything better
It’s hard to find something not to like about this for Montreal. Not paying too much for potential upside that may never come, but long enough to benefit from it if it does, yet short enough to keep him around at least a bit longer as a RFA or easily cut ties with minimal loss if he doesn’t work out. Not a bad deal for the player either. He gets some security from the 4-year term without giving up the opportunity to cash in on his next deal if he gets better. Easy yes vote.

Guaranteed money? Not really sure. At least get 5 years so it walks you straight to UFA
If Newhook was even 80% of Ross Colton we would have kept him. But he is not. And he is too small and not aggressive enough of a hitter/forechecker to be a "Miles Wood".
He is 3LW right now who tries to be a playmaker but isn't developed enough there but still makes regular mistakes/reads. Montreal is paying him as a 3LW so it's a good deal but he was not fitting into what Colorado needed as a 3LW nor a suitable 3C candidate.
He could have been a prospective 2LW for us but getting Drouin at less than $900k made him superfluous on the roster.

It's really the Lehkonen reasoning for Montreal. It makes sense here for Montreal and Colorado. Same with the Lehkonen situation.
If he’s the player a lot of people think that he is then he’s going to be in for a massive pay raise right when Montreal should be competing for the playoffs.
In a bubble the deal is fine but doesn’t do them any favours down the road.
Clear cut W signing here. Newhook May have sold himself short here signing up for 4 years term
I'm kinda shocked its a 4 year term. 2-3 years makes sense but this could look like another Kirby Dach level steal after Dach's under 4m AAV over 4 years before a career year.

This deal sees them through the end of all their current potentially burdensome contracts (Price, Gallagher, Anderson). Newhook would have been unlikely to extend beyond this without the price going noticeably higher, anyway.
Excellent deal IMO. He should have got more. He and Dach could look like absolute steals on their contracts in a years time or even as much as next year. If he improves with the added ice time and coaching from MSL to the same level Dach did last year, they'll be extremely happy with this contract and deal as a whole. Still has to prove it though.
2 different players. Newhook is young with top 6 upside. He's someone you get as a core player that can help you build a winner.
Colton is a final touch player who you don't build around, you acquire when you're contending for a cup as the finishing touch.
Colton's better though... and is just entering his prime whereas Newhook is risky, especially bc it's the Avs who traded him and not a team like Chicago

I disagree that he's better. Like I said in a previous comment, they're two completely different players. Newhook needs to play offensive style hockey whereas Colton is more the opposite.

Yeah, Newhook is Kerfoot... Colton is better Jarnkrok... I'm taking better Jarnkrok over Kerfoot any day of the week
