Realistic Offseason - For real this time

Why wouldn't they have Mailloux and Hutson? Last year they had Harris and Xhekaj...
Mailloux is the most NHL ready when compared to Hutson '24 and Harris '23, Xhekaj '23.
As for Barron, it doesn't matter what his value is now. Habs need to move on. Someone will get him for cheap, unfourtunately

One of Barron/Harris will definitely be traded.
Mailloux will make the big league. Kovacevic is at risk, don't see him in this lineup next season.

It's amazing to go back almost 3 years and see what our reactions were.
I think it's fair to say this OS+contract has been horrible for KK.
But it was also horrible for Mtl. Annndd, it may have ruined 3 careers: KK, Bergy and Dvorak, who has never fit in Mtl.
If Carolina loses someone like Necas because they have to hold onto KK, it can start to unravel quickly.
I think KK needs to be bought out now and given a shot elsewhere.

Canes fans have too high a value for Necas.
He's worth a low 1st round pick.
Why? Because we know Carolina wants to trade him for cap reasons.

Walman is a great 3rd pair defender.
But his contract (3.4 + 10 team NTC) is heavy for a 3rd line
I think a 3rd round pick is about what his value is.
Cost-controlled and cost-heavy aren't the same thing here.

Necas to MTL
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Habs_22_14_20</b></div><div>We all know that, but not because they will lose Montour they will become a bottom team .. look at Boston, they lost both Bergeron & Krejci in one offseason and they are still up there in the standings. Anyway, the trade above is unrealistic, CAR won’t trade Necas for bottom pairing dman & 1st round picks (and MTL won’t offer two 1st round picks for Necas either)</div></div>
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Jobob77</b></div><div>That is true if CGY receive FLO 2025. However, If FLO miss the playoffs, FLO transfer their 2026 1st pick to CGY. Guys, Florida will not miss the playoffs next year :squinty
I mean sure, everyone starts at 0 in October and 'anything can happen', but for FLA to miss the playoffs TB, TOR, DET would all have to be better than they them. Boston will be.

St Loo fans what ya think
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>OldNYIfan</b></div><div>Do you think that McDavid, MacKinnon, Kucherov and Panarin are good <strong>because</strong> they are flashy, or because they are <strong>not</strong> flashy?
Juraj Slafkovsky and Neighbours are at a similar point in the upward arc of their careers -- here are the three youngsters' first full seasons:
Neighbours: 77* games, 27 goals, 11 assists = 38 points, -16 (* 2 games remaining)
Slafkovsky: 79* games, 19 goals, 29 assists = 48 points, -19 (* 3 games remaining)
Zegras: 75 games, 23 goals, 38 assists = 61 points, -21
Slafkovsky turned 20 during his first full season and had 39 NHL games prior to it
Zegras turned 21 during his first full season and had 24 NHL games prior to it
Neighbors turned 22 during his first full season and had 52 NHL games prior to it
Now, I'm not about to predict, or even suggest, which one is going to have the greater, or longer, or more successful career. My point is the converse: that from what (little) we've seen so far, there is no fact-based reason to assert with any confidence that either Neighbours or Slafkovsky will ultimately turn out to be a more impactful player than Zegras.</div></div>
Short answer, obviously the league elites are flashy.
Long answer, you need a lot of nonflashy guys to win with. OReilly, Bergeron, Danault, etc. I'm not putting these guys in the same group, but when you can't find Elite players you need as many of these as you can find. Bergeron was Elite, but not flashy. More impactful? yes I like JN, yes I think he can be more 'impactful' than Zegras.

To move up from 5th to 1st overall?
I would trade the 5th overall plus our 2025 pick top 2 protected, plus Jordan Harris.
If it were for a player of Matthews/Hughes/Bedard calibre than obviously I would add more, but Macklin is more of Dahlin calibre from what the scouts say.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>OldNYIfan</b></div><div>On the basis of what, exactly? His -37 to date versus Zegras' -27 at the same point in his career?</div></div>
not so much statistical. But JN is a goalscorer who goes into corners and comes out with the puck, then he plays in the middle of the ice. He's also a very physical competitor in puck battles.
TZ is a perimeter playmaker who avoids physicality. Yes he has great vision, great puck skills, but I don't like his compete as much as JN. And although its impossible to tell from my keyboard and TV, I'm just not a fan of the flashy stuff. His social media will hinder him I think. Just my thoughts.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>OldNYIfan</b></div><div>Hilarious that Habs fans, who insist that they wouldn't give up pick 5 - 7 for Trevor Zegras (who had recorded over 100 points by his 130th game), would give up that pick PLUS the Winnipeg first for Jake Neighbours, who has 50 points at that same milestone.
Montreal's pick can only be 1, 2, 5, 6, 7, 8 or 9.</div></div>
I see Jake Neighbours as a much better, complete player than Zegras, that's why.
Good point about the pick. Ok, lets assume 5 or 6 then.
