Think every team wins here.

Minnesota - Free 4th Round Pick for Cap Space which has 0 value to them
Toronto - Gets a 3RD LINE CENTER in ROR that gives them the best center core in the league. He's fading, but he's a beast come playoff time and a proven leader that will help the Leafs. Steep price for 2 rentals, but Dubas is desperate to save his job and the Leafs need a trade like this if they want any chance of making the 2nd round (still very unlikely IMO)
St.Louis - Got a mid 20's pick in a very deep draft + a 2nd + 3rd and 2 players with bottom 9 potential in the NHL for a fading UFA Rental Center that's going to want a fat contract for his retirement. Great value

ontario boys will run through a wall for the maple leafs

I seem to recall an Ontario boy running back to Tampa Bay taking less than was offered by the leafs. But yeah no one (in their prime seems to take a hometown discount to be in Toronto. See Tavares

stl wins easily.but what i dont understand is,why the wild would retain half, helping the leafs for only a 4th.minnesota is the loser here, retaining on orielly, with ryan hartman as there number 1 center.a middling team that never has a real chance.they needed orielly.

I like this for Toronto and STL, Toronto gets RoR a proven leader and while possibly declining, still a great player and Acciari to help with their depth. STL gets a 1st + a couple of other picks and some meh players. Not sure why Minnesota traded Pillar and retained 25% on RoR only to get a 4th 2 years away

You're losing at least 1 of those this year. No way are they done yet. They still need to improve their defense and/or goaltending.

Great. I'm down!

It would’ve been Tampa in 5 before this deal. ROR gets them a game.

Wow. Giving the Leafs absolutely no credit...
Everyone knows the Leafs lose in game 7's.

They aren't winning the division. It will likely be 20-24 depending.

A GM on the verge of being fired spent a 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and prospect for a 3rd line center soon to be UFA and still get eliminated in the first round.

How could the ownership allow this? LOL

Going all-in on a center, over any other position (defense anyone?!?), tells you all you need to know about the trust the team has in Tavares and Matthews playoffs performances... TB in 7!!!

What are the Wild doing? As far as I can tell, they took on $3.75M of cap hit and gave up a (marginal?) prospect, and only get a 4th round pick back.

They only took on 1.875M in cap space. The currently have a full roster of 23 and still have a shade under 10M in cap space right now. Not a big deal.

Marner might be a better example.

I think Stamkos got more from Tampa than Toronto planned to offered (in after tax dollars). smile

Minnesota gets:

25% of O'Reilly's salary and a 2025 4th round pick

for

A prospect that was recently drafted out of the 4th round

As a team strapped for cap space, the Minnesota Wild have absolutely no business being in this trade.

Toronto gets from St. Louis:

Ryan O'Reilly
Noel Acciari

St. Louis gets from Toronto:

Adam Gaudette
Mikhail Abramov
Unconditional 1st round pick in a deep draft with no lottery protection
2nd round pick
3rd round pick

Acciari is worth a 3rd round pick IMO.

So, it's Gaudette + Abramov + 1st + 2nd for O'Reilly

Ryan O'Reilly is a shell of his former himself.

Toronto is giving up a package that is way too close in value to what Vancouver got for Horvat or what St. Louis spent on O'Reilly back in 2018.

Minnesota and Toronto lose the trade while St. Louis wins the trade by a mile.

That's when we start thinking of trading Matthews and Nylander - July 2 is the target date if they don't extend for reasonable price.
We can start getting some of the pick/prospects back.

Not gonna lie, I'm getting Nick Foligno vibes from this.

Tell me we couldn't have gotten Chychrun or Meier with a similar haul.

Same

Dubas paid for intangibles in O'Reilly. He's a better hockey player than Foligno, but he's still paying a high price for past performances

Little steep, but the team definitely got better today. Works for me.

I’m going back and forth, but honestly I think it’s actually good.

It’s pretty much a 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th for a cheap ROR and acciari (gaud and abramov are pretty much non assets). I’d be comfy giving up a 1st, 3rd, 4th for ROR at only 1.85m and a 2nd for Acciari (who is super underrated rn).

My thought process is if dubas didn’t make this move and it leaked, Leaf’s fans would not be happy with him

Great trade for the Blues, I'd say. They were able to sell two UFA's for fair/good returns and now theyre set up with 3 first rounders in a solid draft. and could add depending on how big the market is for Barbashev. (I would he gets a 2nd + 3rd in return but who knows)

Also a solid trade for the leafs, they have great players they needed a solid player that was built for Playoff hockey. I've think ROR is a perfect fit and Accari makes their depth a lot better. Sometimes you have to pay a steep price but they have a good enough prospect pool that they can afford to pay a little.
