Malgin is not good at all and Leafs already had way too many undersized players

Personally I really enjoyed watching Malgin play. I thought his effort made up for lack of size. Best of luck to him in Colorado. If he is used right he should thrive there.
I literally know nothing of Hunt. So this is hard to judge right now. But I am voting for Avs until further notice.

Malgin is a pending RFA while Hunt is a pending UFA.

Colorado's GM Joe Sakic probably regretted claiming Hunt off waivers last October.

So, Toronto's GM Kyle Dubas does him a solid and allows him to swap Hunt for the better player.

The Colorado Avalanche win the trade.

Both teams get what they want I think.

Malgin is a better player with more skill, but the Leafs are clearly looking to add a top 6 winger at the deadline. Having Malgin on the 4th line or scratch is a waste.
Avs get a skill forward with more offensive capabilities.
Leafs get a 4th line guy who has that physical edge.

If I had to pick a winner I'd say Avs, but I think its a fair deal

that's where I put it - fair deal, leaning Avs. Toronto gets the physical but less skilled player, which is clearly something they want to target; Hunt meanwhile felt like an odd fit for the Avs and I think Malgin will do well in their system.

Malgin's time in Toronto was coming up as the only time he looked good was on the 4th line but Anderson was taking that spot so it was time for a move

Hunt reminds me of Blackwell. Bottom 6 guy who in certain situations play top 6 heck most of last year he was playing with Panarin and Strome

Its a trade that works for both sides not looking to much into this

Malgin couldn't score on a line with Marner and Tavares, and he wasn't on either PP or PK. Leafs are basically losing nothing, and getting a guy who might make a big hit every few games. I'm fine with it

My guess is Malgin needed to clear waivers so the Leafs wanted to get something for nothing.

Hunt has already been on waivers and is better suited as a 4th line/healthy scratch player.

My "concern" is Hunt now replaces respectable veteran tough guys Clifford and Simmonds, so does this make Dubas look like he is being a goof to those highly regarded team mates.

Voted Av's for the win just because of the contract difference, Malgin is slightly cheaper and a RFA. Plus is he the better overall talent.

Another reason for the Av's for the win, if the Leafs wanted to part ways with Malgin, they could have let him get claimed off waivers and open up another contract. I know losing NAK and releasing Rindell cut the Leafs to 48/50 but Knies will get a contract this spring and the Leafs will do a TDL rentals like normal.

Malgin's a small skill guy who really hasn't done much on Toronto. Maybe with all of Colorado's injuries he'll get some ice time to put up numbers but I wouldn't expect much.

Hunt really isn't a big upgrade but at least he looks like the kind of player boomer fans rave about.

Clifford is beyond useless and Simmonds can only really play once every 2 weeks. At the very least Hunt is useful at the NHL level.

I know Clifford and Simmonds aren't Nhl level anymore, hence my quotation marks on the word concern.

But those old guys are both very likeable and respected in the Leafs dressing room.

Fair deal. Both guys are 4th liners. I like it for the leafs as it adds grit and you can never have too much grit lol.

I think this is a fair deal, leafs trade Malgin who has averaged .30/ppg where Hunt has averaged .22/ppg.

In the career of Hunt he has 193 games played and 45 blocks and 440 hits

in the career of Malgin he has 215 games played and 81 blocks and 185 hits

Both guys are 4th liners but the leafs get what they need for the playoffs a guy who will hit and throw hands, while being defensively reliable, the AVS get a higher skilled forward who has never really broke out in the NHL.

I'd say Coplorado probably won. The trade is kind of meaningless though.
