Nick Foligno a signé un contrat de 1 ans d'une valeur de 4 000 000 $ avec les Blackhawks de Chicago, le 27 juin 2023. Le contrat comporte un cap hit de 4 000 000 $.
Overpay, but Chicago can afford it and it was probably the only way to interest Foligno in staying in Chicago. Good leader which Chicago can use, and a bodyguard for Bedard, Reichel, possibly Korchinski, etc.
Another necessary overpay to get to the cap floor with some cushion. Hawks now sit at 13F 6D 2G while still roughly $1.2 million under the cap floor. Still need to resign Kurashev and maybe C. Jones and that fills the roster. Guessing the cap dump market wasn't as great as they hoped or they just really preferred Hall's higher cap hit and pedigree.
This would be a bad signing for 31/32 teams, but Chicago is about to bring in the next generational player and doesn't have a veteran presence. Whether or not Foligno has the C, this is a guy who can be their captain this year.
You need veterans or else you end up as the 2014 Oilers. Chicago stripped their roster so bare that they have no one in transition they can rely on, so they had to overpay.
Question now is can agents successfully play dumb when the UFA market opens and use this and AA's contract to set market prices despite them being obvious cap floor outliers.
Done with the Hawks for sure. Hawks told him and Kane they wouldn't be resigning them and they gave Toews a nice farewell at the end of the season. Done altogether is TBD, depends on his health/long Covid.
Good signing: you have to be careful with who you chose to play with your upcoming young talent. Sure you could leverage a 2nd out of the islanders to take on Bailey (and they still might) but having a solid veteran leadership core to usher in Bedard/Reichel/the next core is important to get right.
Rumor is he is going to sign Bedard to a 3yr $950,000/yr contract. That's a steal!
The Domi and AA contracts of 1 yr $3M were great. Lafferty at $1.15M per year x 2 years was a good signing. Almost all of his other signings were sub-$1M for AHL or ELC guys. He hasn't signed anyone longer than 2 years (other than ELC).
WHAT? Foligno is not worth anywhere near 4mil, I’d give him like 2mil max though Chicago is like the only team that can pay him 4mil and not suffer the consequences
This is just to get closer to the cap floor. Well, not just to reach the cap floor. But they deliberately overpaid him because it's only for one season, and there's no big name FAs that'll be out there who could reasonably be headed to Chicago.
