This looks a lot better for the Sharks if it ends up being two 1sts. If the devils go out in the first round then they've undersold Meier for sure.

Devils gave up quantity, not quality.
Best asset they gave up was Mukhamadullin, but who cares when you have Necas and Hughes in your D pipeline.

Sharks got some good pieces, but nothing super premium.
W for the Devils, even bigger L for the Sharks in my opinion.

I can't believe the Devil's even got disaster insurance on the picks too. Feels very lopsided, all the sharks have to look forward too is mid prospects and mid picks

Not really mid picks. Possibly two first round picks is fairly far from mid. But def a huge Devils WWW.

I wonder if Holtz was hoping to get traded. Either way, massive W for the jersey boys.

Hatakka is a fairly decent player. Bottom pairing at NHL level.

It’s a Good Return for SJS - NJD still needs to re-sign Meier

Could turn in to 5 Quality Young Players for SJS

for anyone thinking this is a bad return, you clearly have not been watching the cost of wingers in the last few year...

Meier has a lot of negotiating leverage after jersey just spent all that to get him. Especially as he can take his 10 mil qo and hit free agency. The word was he wanted 9ish for term.

If he plays ppg-ish and clicks for the rest of the season I imagine he gets 9-10.5 for term

NJD essentially gave up nothing of consequence to get Meier, and late first and a bunch of C prospects and bottom 6 players is not much to give for a 30+ goal scorer in his mid 26s with 1 more year of control

The Devils still have Nemec, L. Hughes, Holtz, Sharangovich, Bahl, and Mercer. They got one of the best wingers in the league and didn't hurt their future or their present in the slightest. Grier is either a prophet who can see into the future or just delusional. This is horrible for San Jose IMO, although I do like Zetterlund as a get. They didn't even get 2 first round picks which would have been the very least NJD could've offered

In Grier's defense, it might have been a harder sell to most contenders given Meier's ridiculously high QO. NJD is in a position to buy and also have the necessary cap space to extend Meier. That is the only possible way this return can be justified, although I find a lack of interest in Meier due to his QO to be a pretty big stretch. Can't say I'm surprised given how lackluster Grier's trades have been though, can't wait for Edmonton to add EK65 for Cody Ceci

The QO likely won’t mean anything when Timo signs a massive extension this summer. He’s not gonna pass up $8M+ for 8 years just to make $10M once.

For this to have even been a decent trade for Grier Holtz had to have been included. This is awful. I've been a fan of Griers earlier moves but this is just terrible. A late first, a potential late first or a second, a meh prospect (Mukh), decent young guy, and thats it. How did he not get a bigger package??

i'm gonna be completely honest i think this is a really fair deal. meier is a really good player and is going be a solid contributor on a line with hughes/hischier but it's not like the devils gave up nothing for him. gonna miss zetterlund and i really wanted to see what muk + oko could've done at the nhl level with more time in the system. plus the additional picks on our side are mostly wichita thunder players so i doubt they're even gonna make the show.

feels really reminiscent of when people were trashing shero for the taylor hall trade even tho that turned out to be a fair deal for both teams

Good for SJ: Mukhamadullin has as much upside as any defensive prospect available. Zetterlund should be good young piece for San Jose for years to come, plays heavy, quick shot that should be able to produce 20g upside. Okhotiuk plays simple game, avoids mistakes, big hitter…good 3rd pair option. And two picks.

Good for NJ: a top winger that purportedly wants to be in NJ for a bunch of guys that were “maybes” going forward. Zetterlund had been playing well and losing Muk may one day hurt, but our prospect pool was very deep (from stinking for so long) that they all appeared expendable.

Fair deal

His ask started at $9m. NJD started in 7’s. Will likely get Forsberg contract.

They gave up a first, a second that can become a first, a good young player (zetterland), and a guy who would be #2 prospect in most organizations. That's a fair bit.

It's the biggest return I can think of in a trade for a few years.

It's a bit amazing to me how much a LATE 1st is being over valued on this thread. The 1 guaranteed 1st.
The 2nd with not THAT hard conditions to two 1sts. Does getting rid of a cap dump like AJ mean anything. It's been costing a 2nd rounder as of late. Does 50% retention mean anything? Does getting Shakor Mukhamadullin the 2020 #19 OA not mean anything. The players/prospect that seems to be forgotten are also heavily in favor of SJS. This is at least a fair trade. AND I applaud the NJD for doing it! It's a requirement these days to win a cup, but its fair.
