Duncan Keith Is The Most Overrated Defenceman Of The Cap Era

Description
Even as a Blackhawks fan, it is not hard to admit that Duncan Keith is one of the worst and most overrated defenceman in NHL history. There is nothing impressive about him whatsoever. The guy is a turnover machine & is incapable of moving the puck out of the defensive zone. Whenever he's on the ice, the Blackhawks are getting outplayed. The guy can't defend the front of the net & is always out of position. His reputation of winning multiple cups has been severely overblown. Literally anyone could've won with that team. They were so stacked on offence with Patrick Kane & Brandon Saad plus had a tremendous defence featuring Nick Leddy & Dustin Byfuglien. Also, Keith's Norris trophies were undeserved. Just because he played a lot of minutes & scored a lot of points, it doesn't mean he was good. Look at Morgan Rielly for example. Keith has never had a WAR higher than 0.3 throughout his career, so it's embarrassing how bad he is.

Maybe he's a little overrated but so was Derek Jeter. Doesn't mean he's not a Hall of famer and his number will be retired by the Hawks.

Also, as much as I'd like to shed some salary and term to our current payroll, Suter aint leaving. Parise can be convinced to waive his NMC but we could be dead last in the standings and he still would probably nix any trade for him. I just see him wanting to play in Minnesota until his contract is up and then going into retirement in Madison or somewhere. I mean, I could be wrong, but from what I know, Suter isn't leaving.

Well, I’ll take a more hands, less insulting approach in my response.

Respectfully, saying Keith is overrated is a little heavy handed. I’ll admit that some of statistics (assists especially) are helped along by the offensive studs this team had. As for his turnovers and passing, I would ask if you had numbers on the turnovers. Not questioning you, just would love to see numbers. His passing, in my opinion hasn’t always been as bad as you say. He use to be an amazing stretch passer in his prime. The 2015 playoffs was him putting on a show as well.

So while I don’t necessarily agree with your assessment, I won’t shoot it down at all. This team was stacked for years. But I also believe Keith was a big part of that with his leadership and his insane work rate (28-30 minutes a night ain’t easy). But I’m curious as to anything else you could add that missing.

For the MTL trade PITT would have to take some salary back, they have a lot of UFA next year and can’t afford to take on a 4 million plus on the cap without shedding some salary. So maybe Alzner and a 4th or Byron and a 5th would work.

I mean, Keith for almost a 10 year span was among the best D in the NHL. In Norris votes over than span he ranked:

2008- 11
2009- 6
2010- 1
2011- 9
2012- 13
2013- 6
2014- 1
2015- 7
2016- 11
2017- 4

Plus throw in 3 cups, a conn smyth, 2 gold medals, and a World Cup of hockey gold.

I know right. I mean his description is just incorrect lmao if you look at the athletic articles they've posted comparing the Hawks cup run teams Keith wasn't "always under 0.3 WAR" and he also incorrectly stated that Buff played defense with us, which he played wing. He's been spewing pure troll content for a while lol

I know he's not leaving. I traded for him to demonstrate my point that he's been a better defender than Keith.

If you think Keith was a good defenceman, then you don't know what you're watching. Whenever he's on the ice the team gets stuck in their own end. That was especially the case during the 2015 cup run which makes his Conn Smythe even more of a joke. Kane was the best player by far in all 3 cup runs. Just because you score a lot of points and play a ton of minutes it doesn't make you elite. You actually have to get results & Keith isn't capable of doing so.
