Roman Josi a signé un contrat de 8 ans d'une valeur de 72 472 000 $ avec les Predators de Nashville, le 29 oct. 2019. Le contrat comporte un cap hit de 9 059 000 $.
Josi is well worth the money but you cannot give 8 years at a high cap hit to past their prime players. This along with some of the sharks contracts have buyout written all over it sometime after 2024.

Josi is 29 probably plays good hockey till he is 36-37 so I think this is worth the term, at least he isn't signed for that extra 2m contracts like Karlsson are at. I feel like with increased cap in time this will be OK when he is older and around 2026-28 when the contract is big for his skill level the cap will hopefully be closer to 105-110m which is decent.

A players peak years END at 26-27 y/o.
A player goes into serious decline around 30.
Josi will be 30 when this 8 year 9.059 contract STARTS.
He is a fantastic dman, of that there is no doubt but expecting him to be worth it past the first couple years is ludicrous. This is a bad deal through and through.
As of writing this Josi is considered an elite defender. The contract is fair value for now but in year 3-4 of the deal it’ll start to be questionable.
Great signing. Some have posted that serious declines for players happen in their late 20s early 30s which is true for most but Josi is a different case.
First off he plays a style that should not have him break down similar to some more physical player do.
He plays defense which tends to see players continue to play at higher levels until later in their careers.
By the time year 4 or 5 hits the cap will be high enough that 9M should seem like a very palatable number not to mention that the team is not yet in a cap crunch and has a core signed long term for the most part
Lmao. Awesome.
Nash: OK let's work something out
Josi: cool, I want to be a top 3 paid dman
Nash: woah we can't just hand over 10m plus contracts...
Josi: look just give me more than that pylon Subban
Nash: oh... Phew! Yeah no problem
It may not be pretty, but it was inevitable Josi was getting a deal like this, with that being said, I think it’s fair to call John Carlsons contract a steal and Erik Karlssons to be awful

Carlson, Karlsson and Josi all suffer from the same issue. All the deals are bad thanks to the term for the same reasons. Pay a guy until he is 30-32 (either 8 year deal right off or two mid terms or a bridge and a long term deal) and let him go after if he wont take a cut.

A players peak does not end at 27 lmao, a players prime is over at 30 to 31ish, usually average players start declining then, with obvious exceptions (suter, giordano). The aav isnt bad, but i agree the length is a bit much.

I wouldn't say a players peak years end at 26-27....
