Leafs 2023 2024 Season Discussion Part 3 - Winter Blues
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>LeafsFanForSomeReason</b></div><div><strong>At the end of the day, I'd much rather overpay stars</strong> by a bit than hand out too much to lesser players so this isn't the end of the world I guess, but holy smokes, how is it looking like Nylander is about to get 11+ million dollars per year??
He has had exactly one stretch of less than 40 games in his career where he's even been debatably worth that much and somehow that's the number you're going to settle on... Just crazy to me.</div></div>
Agreed with that also but I’m so freaking sick of being a top heavy team with the inability to properly fill out the roster.
Hopefully Matthews, Marner, Nylander will just go God mode on a playoff run to win 16 games

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Juice</b></div><div>I'd love it to be his, too. I guess, with him, the problem is that when he makes a mistake...it tends to be a glaring one...and a lot of times it's unforced. Advanced stats aren't going to showcase that but a coach will definitely remember. Is that fair? Probably not</div></div>
For sure, the lack of standards Keefe has for “his guys” over the depth guys sucks.
TJ Brodie has been god awful this year and still continues to get his mins.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Juice</b></div><div>I <strong>just think Timmins loses his minutes more than he earns them</strong>.....but that's just my opinion. He needs to make 9 great stretch passes to make up for every d-zone turnover
I hope Liljegren continues to see an increased role...I don't think there's any doubt that Brodie has Keefe's trust and so he'll get more minutes....if he's gone next year I think it could be a big year for Lilly.
When McCabe has a quality partner...he does well out there...but I'm not convinced he has a particularly high hockey IQ
Benoit, for me, has definitely been earning his minutes. I don't want to see him getting a bigger role....but I think he recognizes this team lacks toughness and grit and he's willing to try and fill that void...even if he's not that great at it....the willingness earns him some playing time for me</div></div>
Timmins leads the Leafs at 5v5 in CF%/xGF%/HDCF%/HDGF%, and out scored opponents 12-7
Will never understand the lack of trust for him. Is he perfect, absolutely not, but in a sheltered role on the 3rd pair I’d LOVE that role to be his

So long as he can find a niche shutting down NHL opposition and bring along his offensive game a bit, I think 3C is in the realm of possibility for sure.</div></div>
I’m pretty tired of TOR having nothing offensive from their 3rd line C’s (Kerfoot/Kampf) it’s why I’m still open to the idea of Domi there (even with his defensive short comings)

It’s nice to see more fans join the “TOR should stand pat” at the TDL.
Treliving’s only purpose from now till then is finding a resolution to Nylander extension or finding a trade partner if they can’t come to an agreement.

They have a terrible 4th line, a 3rd line that Keefe won’t trust in the playoffs, an inconsistent top 6 that still can’t find the correct pairings, an old/slow Dcore that can’t defend the front of the net (and outside of Morgan Rielly produce offensively), we have no idea who our starting goaltender is and if Joe Woll is that, can he stay healthy (he has been injured every year since he turned pro), they are still coached terribly (every year it’s the same issues, slow starts, playing down to their opponents) and a forward group that is very bad defensively.
But sure, I guess Chris Tanev or Adam Larsson can fix all that.
At least we have Auston Matthews. 🤷♂️

Special teams have been better so I dont know where your getting disaster lul
Almost 79.93% PK which is 16th in NHL not ideal but better than CAR, VAN, and WPG all of whome are supposed to have better Dcore
PP 8th in the league at 24.2%
Like the only issues are cycle and defense those can be fixed by improving the D and bringing in some help thats really it</div></div>
FLA went to the cup final without making a move, so no, it's not.
The playoffs a random as fukc

Your optimism <a href="/users/aadoyle" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">@aadoyle</a> is actually kinda commendable and you probably have a lot better time watching this Leaf team than I do.
EVEN when fully healthy (and excluding Klingberg) this is absolutely the midest TOR team since 2019.
They have disengaged stars, just a mixed bag of B6 players, terrible on the forecheck, terrible at killing off the cycle, special teams are a disaster, no sustainable offensive zone time, and have relied on a rookie goalie to carry them to the half respectable record they have right now.
Just sign Willy and ride this year out and regroup in the summer.

Dont see the need for LW wither as all have looked good especially Bertuzzi whose won his mins. Like Knies has 6 goals in 25 shots not bad. Gregor seems to have settled and not just be a body. And Robertson looks comfortable with Domi and Jarnkrok.

Just to add my two cents, I really hope TOR does not add anyone over 26.
They still need many things:
- two-way 3C
- potentially at top line LW (preferably a grinder type)
- a stay at home top pair RD
- a two-way LD for the 2nd pair that can contribute offensively/defensively
- a 4th line winger who excels on the PK
You don’t have to go all in every year.
FLA went to the fukcin Cup final with making only 1 trade.

Unless it’s a trade for a young cost controlled player that can grow with the team. That’s my wish anyways
