Prior to his injury, Liljegren had been skating nearly 20 minutes per night (19:23), contributing on both special teams and posting the third-best 5v5 expected goal percentage on the club (55.79%).
Um, he has defiantly stepped up.

Leafs 2023 2024 Season Discussion Part 2

Quoting: Juice

The point you're raising is really the big question we have to wait and find out on....
What was Treliving's mandate when he came in? In typical scenarios when a GM is replaced, it's because he got fired and the roster needs, at a minimum, some sort of reset...if not a rebuild...but that's not the case here.
What we don't know for sure:
- how much emphasis is there on Tre to make/keep this a competitive team?...it's year 1 of his tenure...it would normally seem odd for him to jettison picks and prospects for rentals just for this year
- how much say does Shanny have in all of this....we think Dubas walked because he wasn't given carte blanche....does Treliving
Either way...history tells us there aren't going to be any major trades done right now...usually the earliest we see anything is leading up to the Holiday roster freeze which is Dec. 20-27th this year. By then we will hopefully have some bodies on D back and where each team sits in the standings will have a little more clarity. I was stunned at the number of roster moves Dubas made at the deadline last year. It was called for...but I don't think it gives enough time for the roster to gel together....and I agree with you, in theory...that this roster isn't currently showing us they're deserving of major additions this year. Maybe that changes come January/February...but if I'm Brad..I'm not giving up prime assets unless the guys coming back are immediately signing extensions or already have term and will serve me well beyond just this year.

(Just wanted to edited it down for my reply)
You make some very valid points. And as it was pointed out today on a good thread creed jake there were issues stemming from last year.
I feel like I was going blue in the face last year with how terrible TOR’s underlying numbers were, especially after the trade deadline.
There are larger issues at play (coach/style of play) that are getting more pronounced with the style of players Treliving decided to bring in.
Kämpf was already struggling hard last season and is now even more compounded with Reaves beside him. Even with a speedy winger like Gregor beside him is not helping Frank Corrado
Klingberg was an absolute disaster waiting to happen, but even ink has been spilled on him. Just move him hopefully without any assets attached.
Domi/Bertuzzi sounded good on paper but are not exactly defensive stalwarts. And have very limited utility on the roster (no top PP time, neither PK). Very happy to see Domi at C where he should have been all along tho.
Will be very curious to see some of the reactions IF Treliving deals 1st, Cowan, Minten Niemelä (not all) in a trade.
There are too many issues at play with this entire team to invest in them.
But that is just my opinion

I think you underestimate how bad this roster really is.
When TOR was without Muzzin, Reilly, Brodie they went with a combination of:
Bunting-Matthews-Nylander
Jarnkrok-Tavares-Marner
Kerfoot-Holmberg-Engvall
AstonReese-Kampf-Robertson
Giordano-Holl
Sandin-Liljegren
Mete-Timmins
Hollowell
15 game streak without a regulation loss. 12 wins & 3 OT losses from Nov 12 to Dec 13.
I look forward to seeing how much Treliving is willing to mortgage for this current roster/coaching staff.

Maple Leafs tie franchise record by allowing 4+ goals in 7 consecutive home games to begin a season, equalling the mark set in 1976-77
Remember the good old days when we used to set records for wins and points in a season.
The Leafs have 3 regulation wins in 13 GP. Just four teams have less.
Kevin Papetti
Toronto was outplayed in 2 of their 3 regulation wins (DAL & WSH).
They rank:
27th by xGF%
25th by xGF%
This is despite:
-Matthews having 13 G and 19 P in 13 GP.
-Nylander and Rielly playing extremely well.
But remember, two D’s and two 4th liners will fix this.

The issue is this team is not just D away, there are plenty of issues from penalty killing, 5v5 defense, depth scoring, still have the same coach, like could go on and on.
I am at the point and really hope Treliving rides this out till everyone including Timmins is healthy and they are forced to make a move.
Fire Reaves off to whoever will take him, send out Samsonov, and call up Martin Jones to platoon with Woll (but it is Joe's net)
A roster looking like this:
Knies - Matthews - Marner
Bertuzzi - Tavares - Nylander
Robertson - Domi - Järnkrok
McMann - Kämpf - Steeves
Rielly - Brodie
McCabe - Liljegren
Giordano - Klingberg
Woll
Martin
Extras
Timmins
Gregor
This gives you (if you don't have to take back salary) 2.3 to work with at the TDL.
This gives you the opportnity to see A - Is Woll our guy? B- Are McMann/Steeves viable depth options
I actually feel confident Woll can be a NHL starter but you can always move out a McMann/Steeves/Klingberg now giving you close to 8 mil (salary in/out) to make moves.
That is my wish, too each their own.
I would take my chances with that roster then give up picks/prospects

If Brad spent all that and brought in 2 solid additions to this blue line with term im good

If he acquires players with term, agreed no issue here.
At 5v5 TOR is 7th last in xGF%, 2nd in HDCA, 4th in HDGA, and have the 8th worst PK in the NHL.
Imagine thinking the Dcore needs serious fixing 12 games into the regular season. That sounds like a Cup winning team to me.
Teams that are legit Cup contenders need 1 big add at the TDL, maybe 2 with a depth add.
This is not TOR's year

If he spends a 1st, 5th, Prospect, 2nd, 3rd, and a 7th for two Dmen that is a terrible waste of assets. This team is not a couple of D away from being even remotely considered a Cup team.

Then tell Shanahan to grow a pair of nuts and become the GM of this team

Interesting read into how Treliving's philosophy on when teams should be built.
I also believe this will give us a very good indication of how much influence Brendan Shanahan has over his GM's.
It would actually be refreshing if Treliving does not waste picks/prospects on UFA players.

Jarnkrok - Matthews - Marner

Giordano - Timmins
Samsonov
Woll

Realistically, our scoring shouldn't be an issue. The top 9 is as good as any, our fourth line is the only real issue on paper (and in practice).
The defense was a huge missed opportunity unfortunately. Woll only making ~800k next year is going to be so huge

We unfortunately we have the wrong guy in charge making those decisions.
Could not disagree more with that (hopefully that’s ok)
I can potentially see a path forward IF they use Domi at C (that is looking like the case now) and removing Reaves from the roster and creating a line Kämpf can try to excel at in defensive situations.

Too each his own but I find it crazy fans still believe it’s trading one of the core players to solve this. They are literally the only ones scoring, I for one don’t want to imagine a TOR team without them.
Treliving has close to 20 million this offseason and wasted it. Could not have asked for a better situation to walk into.

I could go on a pretty long rant at the moment but I’m just going to ride this season out. There are too many holes on this roster (just so poorly constructed) that adding one D can fix.
But yea, I do like Dillion a lot but he is also a UFA. Just wait till next year, I’m going to be super pissed if Treliving uses assets for UFA’s
