Leafs 2023 2024 Season Discussion Part 3 - Winter Blues
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>NorthernLeafsFan05</b></div><div>I mean I'm not really giving up hope yet. Atleast we aren't buying into a team that we know is garbage. These are the growing pains of retooling a roster to fit a different mindset, like the 2019-20 Leafs. I have no doubt they'll figure it out, and I am a fan of Treliving's roster construction philosophies (that Calgary blueline was a work of art). I can't say that the results this season have really been surprising, and atleast the core is locked up so we don't have to worry about them
I'm not giving up yet. Whether that belief is blissful ignorance or not is yet to be seen, but I think the Leafs will be fine. Keefe will finish this season as head coach, the Leafs will make no major moves at the TDL (maybe a Robertson / Timmins prospect swap of sorts?), and we will get bounced in the first round of the playoffs. It'll be the same old story as always.
I personally like to think that the lack of success recently has fallen largely on our goaltending. This team will be fine when Woll is back. I also believe that this kind of forward group is EXACTLY what Treliving wants, but the blueline is still a long ways off. That'll be the priority this summer. For now, I want to see some strategic long term additions. Give me Alex Texier, give me Brandon Duhaime, give me Mario Ferraro (unless he costs more than like a 2nd round pick combined). Just be smart with our assets, that's all I want</div></div>
I could not be more on the other side of this thought process but I appreciate you still having faith 🤜
I am petrified we are entering the world of the “mushy middle” in the NHL.
We have Auston Matthews on pace for 67 goals, Nylander on pace for 111 points, Marner on pace for 92 points, Rielly is on pace for 14 goals 69 points (his highest since 18/19) and every single addition Treliving has made is terrible.
This team is actually in danger of missing the playoffs. That’s fukcin nuts.
Tyler Bertuzzi for all his super underlining numbers has less goals than Morgan Rielly.
Max Domi has no natural fit on this roster.
David Kampf is dragging down everyone he plays with.
John Klingberg was a disaster.
Ryan Reaves is a disaster.
Noah Gregor is fast, with no idea what do to next
I have zero faith in Treliving’s ability to build around this group and we are totally fukced now because everyone of consequence that you could move has a full NMC.
I am definitely half glass empty
Lastly, as a full on Sheldon Keefe hater, he is not the problem right now. This is a bad roster construction

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Juice</b></div><div>There's a common adage in hockey....show me a good goalie and I'll show you a good coach.
Berube joined the Blues and Binnington goes on a massive hot streak. Binnington stops being a stud and the Blues/Berube look average at best
DeBoer and Vegas is a very different situation...I think, anyway. DeBoer was a specific guy Vegas wanted...he had beat up on Vegas as coach of the Sharks and, when he became available, they moved quickly to fire Gallant and bring him in.
I don't know if the leafs view any of the available candidates as "their guy"....but I'd much rather they figure out who that guy is and then act swiftly vs just <strong>firing Keefe because we're on a little losing streak</strong> and hire from an unimpressive group just for the sake of change.
Think about it...if they hire someone new now....he's going to get the rest of this year....all of next year for sure....and almost certainly the year after that. That's a min of 2.5yrs of this core's prime. So while I'm for a coaching change if it's specific...meaning they are certain they are hiring the guy they want....I'm completely against a coaching change if it's really just an experiment of hope that the next guy can do better.</div></div>
As someone who is not a Keefe guy I actually agree with not firing him in season.
This is a poorly constructed roster with some major holes to fix that can’t be accomplished till the offseason.
I would also let this season play out with Keefe and this roster and see how that plays out.
I see no other team that is searching for a HC “right now” so guys who are available today will be available in the offseason

Cause if hes doing defense just swap him and Malhotra and have the Canes guy run defense and PK
But at this point Berube is what they need. A hard head old school coach who took the Blues on the run of a century to win the cup for the first time since 1967
Its destiny</div></div>
Mike Van Ryn runs the Dcore (even to the point of telling Keefe to put McCabe out on 3v3)
I have zero confidence in Mike Van Ryn outside of someone finally taking the training wheels off Liljegren

VGK fired Gallant in January with a 24-19-6 record. Keefe's rn 21-11-8
As yes its only been 2 games but two multi goal leads blown where your team dominated the first period
0 adjustment as it seems Keefe is allergic to when a team pushes back
And not rewarding the bottom 6 who actually looked good these past two
Holmberg was having the best 2 games of his life and u dont put him in the top 6 to maybe create a spark and instead in a classic Keefe move shove Nylander with Matthews and Marner who also didnt look good tonight
<strong>Gimmie Berube</strong></div></div>

Since Dec. 1st #LeafsForever forwards 5v5 production and rank overall in the NHL.
Matthews - 13 points (17th)
Nylander - 12 points (27th)
Marner - 11 points (36th)
Domi - 10 points (45th)
Tavares - 6 points (158th)
I realize points are not everything but am I crazy for wanting Domi at 2C.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Juice</b></div><div>that language doesn't instill much confidence...I agree. Player bet on himself to succeed...team bet on him to stagnate...player won, team concedes.
But as much as I want Willy signed...I think mentally I'm not going to get past $11.25m because there isn't any rationale behind it....<strong>it basically becomes a Toronto tax</strong>...or Willy's camp (ie his dad if the report is accurate)...just wants to bend the team over and squeeze every last ounce out.
I want to hope the team simply says that this is our best and final offer. If you go on top pot 50goals and 120 points and win the Hart...this is still our top offer. You need to decide if you want to play in Toronto or go to free agency and hope you get the same offer from a team that actually gives you a chance to win.....and front loading/bonus everything to maximize his time value of money....but the line in the sand needs to be drawn at that number</div></div>
I just find it hard to believe there is a team that would go to get to 80 million (7x11.42)
I would put on the table 8x10 and say take it or leave it until the TDL or we trade you. If you want to be here great but if you want to risk getting less or to team that might not be as competitive as TOR then so be it.
You just can’t let him walk for nothing but I hate this notion of bending over for him.

But they can still add some interesting pieces it just wont be ideal in an area or two
Contracts I gave in the example
11.25m x 8 years = Willy (rumoured so went with it but could be higher lul)
5.5m x 4 years = Demelo (Basically the big prize)
2.5m x 3 years = Liligren
825k x 2 years = Benoit
3.15m x 6 years = Domi
1.1m x 2 years = Robertson
4.25m x 2 years = Henrique
1.2m x 2 year = Jones (Backup G)
1.8m x 2 years = Hakinpaa
1.95m x 3 years = Trenin
And for Graduates: Kokkonen and Steeves
But yea basically we lost Bertuzzi. Unless they feel comfortable with Minten in 2024-2025 then alot can change
Would have preferred more space to really improve the Dcore but then forward depth goes out the window as then we relying to much on prospects and gambles lul</div></div>
I’m not going to bother guessing on future numbers or players who might be available/interested in coming to TOR.
I do not believe Nylander will be an 11+ player over the next 4 seasons (especially 8) he is having a fantastic season in a CONTRACT YEAR. Every season before this season would align him to 9 or mid 9’s.
To think this might get to 11.25 or 11.5 is nuts.
I hate the idea of Nylander not being here but I would be exploring trade opportunities, but that’s my view, I realize probably not shared.
I could at least rationalize this IF they proved this in the playoffs but all of them (including Matthews) have not lived up to these deals.
I’m don’t see a world where you can construct a competitive roster with 3+ players taking up sooooooooooo much cap
