Nick Foligno has signed a new contract with the Chicago Blackhawks.

Obviously its a terrible contract, but that's the point. He's a veteran leader for the next 2 seasons on a crap team

Well, it’s a really bad contract, but for Chicago, a good contract. Veteran stays in Chicago, for the young talent, he gets paid, and it helps with Chicago’s cap for the next few years (getting them to cap floor). Win win for everyone.

I think that it's okay. Is Foligno worth 4.5 million? No. Is he gonna be worth 4.5 million over the next 2 years? Definitely not. But he seems like a great role model for the young players coming up, both on and off the ice. The Hawks are also so far under the cap floor next year that they'd have to throw money randomly just to meet the cap floor that this deal seems fine. Overly expensive, but was probably giving that money to someone eventually, why not a role model player the team is already familiar with.

I understand Chicago wanting to keep Foligno, I don't understand the AAV however. I get it that Chicago is rebuilding and likely not a cap team but it is so far above his market value. I feel like they could hit the cap floor in other ways to help their young players have talent around them to develop.

On it's own, this is a terrible deal. But if Foligno is as good in the locker room as people say, then it's a clever way to hit the cap floor.

In the next 2 years they have 8ish million in dead cap coming off the books with only Vlasic and maybe Reichel due for big raises plus AA, Beau, Hall and Zaitsev all making over 4million expiring. Plus the cap likely going up 6-8 million over the next 2 years, They're going to be near the cap floor for a few years even with massive overpays

I voted yes. Obviously, the value is way too high but Chicago can easily afford it for the next 2 years and he can continue to mentor Bedard. This is a good deal for the Hawks and the benefit of keeping Foligno around will pay dividends even if his on-ice performance slips (it will).

Great leader. Period. 3.5 M of the AAV is simply mentorship and physical presence for Bedard. Those angry can just think of this as an extra AAV for Bedards ELC. Thats it.

Well since the contract is for 2 years and they don’t plan on contending for the next 2 years… yes. They plan to contend in the remaining 8 years when the prospects are ready and they can make legit FA signings.
