Filip Gustavsson has signed a new contract with the Minnesota Wild.

Had a breakthrough season and a solid (but unfortunately quick) playoff run. I like this smooth AAV but a bit bad on the team that he'll end up as a UFA.

Seems low, considering is very likely at least the 1a goalie for the Wild this year.

I really would love to know what each side asked for on this one. If I were Gustavsson and believed in myself I'd have been pushing for 1-2 years. Yeah he gives up security but if he believes in himself and replicates he's getting 5-6 for term easy. Instead he's now going to hit Ufa at 28. Still comfortably in his 20s. But maybe he himself wanted some security. Hard to know

Fair deal for the 1st year where Fleury will still see plenty of starts, after that it should be a steal for the Wild for 2 years.
Ottawa really screwed the pooch on this one- gave up way on him way too early, along with the Debrincat trade-they set themselves back last off season. Goalies take longer and being impatient can cost you. Buffalo gave up on Ullmark too early as well.

Yeah, you could argue that backing up Fleury in Minnesota was the perfect scenario for his development, and that he wouldn’t have developed that way in Ottawa platooning with Hedberg or Søgaard, but I never understood that trade, even at the time. It seemed like a very short-sighted move to trade him for an old 1-year rental goalie when everything else they were doing looked like they were trying to build a sustainable future with players Gustafsson’s age. I know they wanted to make the playoffs last season to help them sell the team, but a buyer would look beyond that and see that it didn’t make sense to get there by sacrificing somebody who could help keep them in the playoffs for years to come.
