I actually like it for both sides - Habs get a solid player who can be a short-term 3C option, while Monahan bets on himself to reproduce last year's success. However, it's not a clear indication of further moves since you can't plan around Monahan in this place and time.
Does this mean Drouin is coming back too? How about him and Monahan on a job-sharing program? The two of them combined might be the equivalent of one full-time player.

High risk, high reward... Matches MTL's offseason so far, pretty good move
What high risk? It’s a one-year deal for a small amount of money in a season where the team isn’t seeking to contend. Pretty much the definition of low risk.
Anything they can get for Monahan at the deadline (in addition to the eventual 1st we were already paid) is a big bonus.
MTL tries to bring their young guys up to give them a shot, a contract slot is already taken by Monahan... on top of that, it 1.9 mill that MTL still has to pay off if Monahan doesn't play well. You have to expect Monahan to get hurt midway through the year if you want to compete. If you don't want to compete and sell Monahan off at TDL, what message are you sending other FAs?

Ok great, what message are you trying to send to other FAs then? Get your bags packed as soon as you get here because we're going to trade you? On top of that, that's an extra contract spot that's now taken up...
The fact no one has money this offseason probably meant Mtl was the only team willing to go above 1M. Pretty savy for the 1 year term by Hughes as the Habs have boatloads of cap this offseason but next year in 2024 will be tight. If Mony is healthy, should be a nice return (w/retention) at the TDL

"We'll give you a chance to play top 6 minutes and show what you can do and then we'll work to send you somewhere you have a chance to win at the deadline. If things go well, you'll have the chance to prove to a team you're worth signing to a longer, more lucrative deal and perhaps win a Cup while you're at it."
