He’ll get a lot more than 2 x 2 with the trajectory he’s on. His rate numbers were good despite the fact that his teammates did a terrible job at capitalizing on the chances he created. With some regression there and more ice time , he’ll get 7-9 goals 30+ points which will means his next contract starts with a 3 at least

Mmm unless he has a 65+ point season at most arb would probs give him is what Kylington got 2.5mill x 2 years

As Kylington had 9 goals and 22 assists in 73 games and got 2.5mill

Sandin probs gets around the same totals and so 2-2.5mill x 2 years is probs where he will be

i might be in the minority but i'm fine with the captaincy having nothing to do with skill.

No chance Sandin gets that little if he gets a 1 year 1-1.5 mill this season. He can use Dunn and Sanheim as comparables. Out of the D on the leafs, Sandin has the best chance of having a true #1 D impact in the next two years, probably not a good idea to treat him like a depth defenseman

Dont see him getting more on a 1 year deal as hes got no grounds. All his leverage is gone. Its either 1.4mill x 2 years or sit out. Sanheim and Dunn are not comparable to his current circumstances

Rn comparable contracts from the same age group

Brannstrom 900k x 1 year
Anderson 1mill x 1 year
Liligren 1.4mill x 2 years (Teammate)
Boqvist 2.6mill x 3 years
Jokiharju 2.5mill x 3 years
Kylington 2.5mill x 3 years

Boqvist, Jokiharju, and Kylington are more proven so that leaves

Brannstrom, Liligren, Anderson as the main comparable's rn

In the end I see him taking a Liligren deal otherwise he sits and that will do little for him or his future. As why would Dubas give in to him and go k fine 1.5mill x 1 year

Brannstrom is terrible, Anderson has 0 offensive upside, Boqvist is a fine comparable right now, so give him the 2.6 mill x 3 this offseason. All bets are off after next season. You’re failing to realize that Jokiharju and Boqvist got those deals out of their ELCS, Sandin (if he gets 1 x 1.5) will be in a similar situation to Vince Dunn.

As I said before its either 1.4mill x 2years like Liligren or under that on a 1 year deal. Otherwise he sits out. Hes got no grounds to ask for more

All the leverage is gone. Only choice sign the offer given or sit out. And if he sits Leafs dont care as unlike the Nylander situation they got a full Dcore ready to start the season

Its a battle he isnt winning

He should not take 1.4 for 2 years, he’s worth more than that. They should just trade him if they’re not going to pay him close to what he’s worth + not give a top 4 role

Then he can sit out

Leafs got 0 reason to trade him and 0 reason to give in to his demands. If GM's do this they are viewed as weak by player agents and will have more difficult time with contract negotiations. If Dubas stands firm and Sandin gives in he will send a message to all player reps and that will be very good for future negotiations

Got a feeling as I said time and time again hes gonna give in and sign the deal laid out earlier (1.4m x 2 years) otherwise no playing in the NHL

Yeah I’m sure alienating the defenseman with the most upside on the team will be worth it. I’m not saying give him 5 mill x 3, but he’s already a competent 2nd pair caliber defenseman. He’s worth 2.5-2.75 mill x 3 right now. He’s better than Jokiharju and Boqvist. If not his best bet is to take a 1 year deal to either get what he deserves or force a trade

If we look at the timeline for Sandin going for the deal laid out now is a huge W for him in the long run

Rn he can sign 1.4mill x 2 years as by the time its up Muzzin, Gio, and Brodie's deals are up and with a cap increase more than 1mill Sandin then can go k Dubas I want a 5-8mill deal for 6-8 years and with all that freed up cap space and if he proves himself no reason to see why he wouldnt earn something like that So while it might look like an underpay now it will lead to a huge opportunity for a massive pay raise for him and Liligren down the road. Question is will they rise to the challenge. Going with a resounding yes but we shall see.

There’s a good chance sandin is the leafs best defenseman by the end of next season, the leafs would regret a 1 year deal with him when he can just go to arbitration.

In a vacuum, I'd agree with this. But as the way things stand now, the risk for the Leafs in the form of arbitration after a 1 year deal is pretty low. While he's certainly got the potential, I just don't think he's going to get the time or opportunity to make a strong case. Not saying he shouldn't be getting that opportunity, but that's a whole other discussion.

Part of the reason I ask is that I realized something interesting about when Torts Joined Columbus. They Traded for Seth Jones 4 months later. Tortorella has said this offseason he doesn't like the room in Philly and he didn't like the room in Columbus when he got there. The Flyers have mentioned an aggressive retool could that still have some truth to it?

Also, something note within the next year they Traded for Panarin too.
