The whole point is they can’t lol. None of these guys have ever sniffed 20 goals. The Blues had 3 20+ goal guys in their bottom six last year. And 6 in their top 6, which is 1 more than Toronto projects to have next year as well. And they were only a second round team with that depth. Teams aren’t successful in the playoffs without solid depth scoring. Just look at Tampa Bay, who has famously had a dominant 3rd line every cup run (and usually a fairly impactful 4th liner like Joseph or Colton). Or Colorado, who got key goals from guys like Compher and Lehkonen. Or Washington, who had DSP catch fire when they won the cup and Eller contributing 7 goals on that run as well. With depth like Toronto’s, you’re banking on an inexplicable hot streak, preferably from at least 2 or 3 guys, at the perfect time of year. It’s just so unlikely to happen.

The thing about Torontos bottom 6 though is it’s actually really good defensively. All of Kampf, Jarkrok, NAK and ZAR (provided he signs) are heavy defense first guys. Engvall is a 2 way guy who would be the only one of these 5 that might sniff 20 goals or 40 points. But if you look at the 3rd line last year, it was extremely effective. Jarkrok should effectively replace Mikheyev defensively (he just won’t do quite as much offensively), and the same goes for NAK and Kase. Plus it looks like they’ll have ZAR too. So defensively, they have one of the best defensive bottom 6s in the league. I think they’ll be fine as long as the top 6 doesn’t get heavily struck by injuries or slumps.

Mikheyev didn’t really play in the top 6 though…

Kerfoot-Tavares-Mikheyev was our 2nd line for a good chunk of the second half of the season as Mikheyev forced his way up

Did help us create a nice third line of Engvall-Kampf-Nylander

Kampf was a nice surprise last playoff series. That shorty from him was amazing. This year my suspicion is one of Jarnkrok or Engvall is gonna be the guy but I wouldnt rule out Gaudette. My easy prediction this year is Jarnkrok hits 20 goals for the first time

In general man if I saw a 4th line of ZAR-Kampf-Kubel I would be terrified as that would be a 4th line that could chip in some goals, play super strong defense, and lay out some big hits. Kind of like what NYI's identity line was doing

I like the idea of that line too. Physical, defensively responsible, all that a 4th line should be.

Well, it wasn’t used near as much as Kerfoot-Tavares-Nylander is my point. It wasn’t Keefe’s ideal lines.

There’s a good chance sandin is the leafs best defenseman by the end of next season, the leafs would regret a 1 year deal with him when he can just go to arbitration.

Disagree. Should be a mix of skill and leadership. Would be dumb to make your best player captain if they can't set a good example/lead the team. But also dumb to give it to a 4th liner who's a good locker room guy.

Good example is Chicago with Toews and Kane.

Giving it to a fourth liner would be stupid but I think that’s where the A helps out. Like Lucic has one I’m pretty sure if not he used too,

Also I think Oshie or Wilson should be the captain over Ovi

Yeah, captain should have a mix of skill and leadership, Calgary gave it to Gio over someone like Gaudreau for a reason, Chicago gave it to Toews over Kane, CBJ gave it to Boone Jenner over Werenski

Which is actually a huge bonus for us as the Arb probs would award him 2mill x 2 years or something as often they go right in the middle of the 2 teams asks

As I mentioned probs gonna see him give in and sign a Liligren deal 1.4mill x 2 years before training camp as it allows him to more so prove himself and show why he deserves the bigger deal he craves later

Agreed Leader doesnt have to be the best guy

A Leader should be someone who gets the team motivated, sets examples, good with the media

While also achieving the points on the ice

When people get mad about JT over AM for C honestly go listen to people talking about how JT works both on and off the ice and man there is nobody better rn

The fact that guy barely rests and trains on area's of weakness just sets such a good bar for current and new members

While I do see AM as Leafs C soon one more season of JT at C wont be a world ender

He’ll get a lot more than 2 x 2 with the trajectory he’s on. His rate numbers were good despite the fact that his teammates did a terrible job at capitalizing on the chances he created. With some regression there and more ice time , he’ll get 7-9 goals 30+ points which will means his next contract starts with a 3 at least
