If Svech is done for the season the Canes are likely one and done (at best) in the playoffs.

And they already had road game playoff issues to deal with

I'm ok with them falling. I'd rather watch any East playoff team make a deep run. Canes just aren't a fun team, imo. Especially w/o Svech.

Well why did we boo subban?

He was hated when he played for Montreal as well. Don't know a single person who's hated Lehkonen.

"The Canes have no stars" (not specifically quoting you but I've heard it frequently enough).... until one player gets injured and suddenly the team was being carried all along?

The Hurricanes are not the Oilers. They are built for defence and depth. They were successful in December when Aho was injured, they were successful in January without Slavin, and if it wasn't for Ullmark and the Bruins, they would be leading the Jennings race, with all three of their NHL goaltenders playing at least 30% of their games. The team as constructed right now can succeed in May, even without Svech

CAR and NJD styles so very different.

(CAR generates shots off cycle/forecheck...NJD off the rush)

I agree that they have exceptional depth at every position. But, they've had problems scoring in the playoffs before. Their special teams struggled immensely last postseason. Their PP was terrible (13%). Svech is an integral part of the Canes' offense and they're gonna struggle to score w/o him. I'm sorry, but they're in big trouble.

Wrong quote.

I wanted to make something like this except it was for the purposes of auto labeling video footage and finding some new ways to quantify the competition.

You could send a careers worth of video through it and isolate tendencies in athletes, such as decision making when opposition is in proximity (I.e. play him tight), decision making when time restricted, losing, etc, what paths are taken to open lanes to obstruct by positioning, etc.

Honestly tried to pitch it to an agm and it went nowhere frown

Not surprising to see another unskilled retiree joining the “skill it up” complaints. Perhaps they should prepare for the NHL that is coming, not the NHL that has been.

The league is heading in right direction. Never look back.

I take his point; valid.
I miss the 'grit' and I'm not talking about fists.

All skill, is leading to an 82-gm NHL-All Star series coming to you soon and a feature for disaster long-term imo...
No doubt, to watch a defensive game is not a lot of fun on the tube for many (see NJ of 80s-90s); but to those that "get it" - nothing finer!

To have played that way myself. To skate all day like a mucker-grinder into the corners and work your a s s off with the goal to shut the "skill" - gold!
It's the Chess within the Checkers - foundational to THE GAME.

One can be skilled at playing defensively, or skilled at pulling the puck off the boards. But the turning the game back to a clogging, slow, muck-grinding affair where unskilled big bodies shut-out skilled athletes…would irreversibly harm, or potentially kill, the sport.

(Also, for the record, the history on the Devils is a little off. In the 1980s, they were mostly bad, other than one Cinderella run in 1988. In the early 1990s, they were an improving and mostly offensive team. By the 1994 season, they were 2nd in NHL in scoring. They deployed a trap in the 1995 playoffs that caught lots of people’s attention. They used again in 1996, but missed the playoffs, so it was phased out the following year. By 1997, it was fully scrapped, and over next five years, they were the 2nd highest scoring team in NHL.)

Never said I'm a clutch-grab advocate or a pugilist fan...
However, if any coach/mgr can win that way - they will!

As you say, the mucker grinders then/or now, are seldom "large" dopes dragging their knuckles along the kick-plate - think more Sutter(s), Gilmour (could do it all), Steve Kasper, Gainey, Campbell-Paille-Thornton, Jarret Stoll, Hyman etc.

* Army's point is (and he has pee wee aged kids which I'm sure provides a lot of his narrative): NOT all kids that are required to feed the BIGS one-day are skilled to "Mc-Ja-sus"

PS: Purposely, I have no idea on NJ trivia & the swamp!
