Description
Not that the Leafs are going to trade Marner, but since they need cap space and a good defenceman, I just want to explore which teams could acquire him.

I think Nashville would have to add. Nylander for Ellis could make more sense. But Marner for Ellis seems like a steal for Nashville

applaud correct Nylander for Ellis is a fair 1 for 1 if were looking just at the needs.

Marner would be for Ellis +

I think TOR would never accept that trade.

Although that team looks pretty good.

This is garbage, a player leaving his prime for one just entering is stupid.

Nylander is too young and Ellis too old. Why does no one get how players age on here? Ellis is injury prone in his prime, that isn't going to get better with age.

Because position wise this would help them.

This trade would bring them closer to a contending status now.

And shorten their window by about 4 years and also cause future cap problems by having a guy under contract for 6.25 million who is almost guaranteed to decline and already has injury problems. Hard pass on Ellis, he's great but his contract makes him not worth getting.

This is a joke right. No chance the Leafs will ever trade Marner as he is a franchise and generational player.

No, not really. Their window hasn't even opened with that defense and who's to say Matthews or Marner would play for TOR after 4 years when their contracts expire.

Also his contract is very affordable when comparing to others. Very few D's in his level can be found at $6M...much less long-term.

Age is still a very big issue here regardless of Marner or Nylander. Position isn't the end all, be all.

Age is not an issue for the whole time Leafs' window is open to be fair. Ellis is only 29, not even 30...

The old, 1 star player in the past decade left when their contract was up so Marner (a local kid) and Matthews (loves the spotlight and wants to win) are going to leave because that 1 star player left and went to TO rhetoric. Yeah it's so likely, just like when Ovie, Crosby, Malkin, Stamkos, Doughty, Price, Kucherov, Benn, Seguin, Josi, Kane, Toews, and Kopitar all left after their deals were up and they could go anywhere with as an FA. Totally, with that in mind, the Leafs have no chance of signing any of their core players.

Yea I don’t see the Marner for Ellis because of the plus included with Ellis would be another significant piece for Nashville especially with the retention. I think Nylander for Ellis makes sense even though people on here are complaining about age difference. The fact that Ellis would make Toronto’s defense a ton better and increase their chances at a cup for the next 5 years would benefit the leafs. People talking about him being injured prone only sees that he got hurt the last 2 years but don’t see that one of them was a cheap shot by perry that would of put almost anybody out. I really don’t want to lose Ellis to be honest but if it’s for someone like Nylander I would really put a lot of thought in it if I’m poile. I watched our defense struggle without Ellis and as soon as he came back we started winning games and looking a lot better on defense. I thinK Ellis’s contract is a steal and he’s the type of player that will be good almost his whole contract. It’s comical when people talk about defenseman declining at 30 but some of the Norris winners the last few year have been older

Yeah I just feel the Leafs would have more interest in Marner cuz they clear more cap space. Most likely they're gonna need to sacrifice one of him/Nylander if they want to get an elite defenceman.

I get that there is quite an age difference between them, but I wouldn't call it a bad trade. Both players are top 5-10 in the league in their respective positions. Gotta keep in mind that elite defencemen usually carry more value than elite wingers, that's why I did 1 for 1.

no, it's a bad trade flat out. And you didnt do it 1 for 1, you did it 1 for 1 and had the leafs retain for some reason.
Ryan Ellis is very good, but he is also on the back half of his career and that majorly impacts his value when compared with Marner. So not only would there be no retention, there would be a big add from Nashville because Marner has significantly more value. Not only that, but Ellis just got off a concussion.
