Avs are reporting that backup goalie Pavel Francouz will miss time due to slower than expected recovery from off-season surgery.
Either Justus Annunen gets the backup job or the Avs hit the waiver wire (which will have some pretty good options: Reimer/Lyon (Detroit), or possibly, Stolarz, Martin Jones, Rittich, Hellberg, Stalock).
There are some cheap trade options such as: Casey DeSmith (Montreal) and Eric Comrie (Buffalo) but they both have $1.8m AAV x 1 year deals and if/when Francouz is healthy the Avs would have not have cap space (even buried); same goes for Dan Vladar but he has a longer deal so doubly so ($2.2m x 2). UFA options are Jaroslav Halak and Brian Elliott as the "best" available.
Of all the options I would prefer a trade with Montreal for DeSmith if they would retain 50% of his salary (or a least $800k so we can bury him in AHL if needed later in the year). If the Habs waive him and we pick him up then we'll be over the cap when Frankie returns.
I also like some of Ottawa's depth at goalie: Mandolese and Søgaard but they are both waiver exempt so no pressure on the Sens to move one of them.
