Description
Since we are back to seeing Damon Severson trades again, I thought I'd try to put together a few trade comps. Some of the teams may not fit, but hopefully the comps match up. These are for fun, but can also be useful. Let me know what you think.

Détails additionnels:
Note: Not the perfect comp since Habs aren't buyers. Also, Matheson is a bit older than Matt Carle, who was 23 and one-season removed from leading rookie dmen in scoring. But his contract was similar % of cap as Matheson's and was seen as an underperfomer in 2007-08. He was eventually flipped to Philly, where he had his most notable seasons. Wishart was a 6'4" 225 lb defensive LHD taken 16th overall in 2006 draft and had been putting up some points in WHL in his D+1 and D+2 seasons.

Montreal is not doing anything close to this, no teams are. That trades comp is pre-cap era, not the same at all. Also your values are all over the place, somehow you have Montreal giving up what equates to 2 1st + 2 2nd's + 4th but you only have Washington giving up what equates to a late 1sts and a 3rd or 4th (Borgstrom is a 25 year old 4th line winger). Your likely closer on the Washington trade (a late 1st + decent prospect and cap offset), Severson is a UFA and that is the going rate for UFA's at the deadline.

    Connor McDavid?

For Severson, I'd say look at those packages above and come up with something similar. Our needs are simple. We need better goaltending than last year. We need a big-body-soft-hands type to play in net-front area and tip, deflect, screen and clean up rebounds (we had hoped that Nolan Foote would become that guy, but his development has been slow, like his skating). And we need maybe one big, mobile LHD that can move the puck efficiently out of d-zone.

would 1st and Schaefer (big boy with grit, sneaky good hands, good shot) or Broberg (moblie LHD) and a 2nd be a good package

Read what I wrote. Habs, as a team, are not a good fit.

But am looking at previous trades for d-men that are similar to Severson today. I am using them as comps.

Hughes would laugh at this offer. No other team is giving up a prospect as good as Guhle and that Florida pick isn't one MTL would give up for a rental.

I get the value from the trades, but I would think Ottawa would have little to no interest in retaining anything on Z. I'm also bullish on them trading this year's 1st when the playoffs are far from guaranteed.

These are comps. Not asking prices. (It says it there in the title). They are intended to give a range of prices that could mimic a market. In other words, these are not the answer to “what do we need to pay” but are more an answer to “what could other teams be paying”. Comps. Like when you buy a house.

So for instance, if you are the GM of a team in need of a player like Severson, and you want to know what a competitive bid would look like, you’d want your AGM to assemble a list of comps. It doesn’t mean all those teams are bidding. And since players aren’t really sold via auction, there is no market information about bid vs ask prices. So your AGM makes up a list like this. And if it’s accurate, you’d have a rough idea of what type of offers Tom Fitzgerald is receiving from your competition. Some good, some bad.

    Does that make sense?

“Bullish” usually means optimistic or with the expectation that something will improve. (“Bearish” means opposite). Do you mean you expect them to trade a 1st? Or you don’t want them to?

If it were an actual offer, I would be surprised if NJD took anything with Zaitsev included. Our GM has never taken a cap dump, even when we had tons of space in a flat cap era. So I doubt they would start today. (They last one NJD took was in 2016 with Savard trade, and we have had some lousy teams with tons of cap space since).

Sorry, my bad was thinking that the Boyle trade was pre-cap (thought his career ended before 2012 LOL).

Comps are meant to be similar to help narrow down a players value not be so wide spread as to confuse what the player is actually worth. You don't see the press say well this player has a value anywhere from 4 1sts to a 7th round pick. You see them say (lets use Lehkonen last year) Lehkonen has similar stats and is better defensively than Goodrow so his value will be slightly higher, somewhere around a 1st + 3rd maybe a 1st + 2nd.

The problem is this list is all over the place, you use the housing market as an example. Well in the housing market, houses are compared to others in the neighbourhood with similar number of bedrooms and finishes. They don't compare a 8 bedroom mansion 3 streets over with marble counters and heated indoor pool to a 3 bedroom house with laminate counters and an above ground pool then say that these are the comps for the neighbourhood LMAO!

Sure they do. Have you ever bought a home? They will compare a 4000 sq ft home and a 2000 sq ft home when in similar neighborhood, then adjust for size, age of property, etc. You can get a price-per-sq-ft figure, you can get information on bids above/below asking. At the end of the day, no two homes are perfectly alike.

As for the trade comps, if they all had similar values as returns, that would assume there is one price to pay for a player. As we know there is not.

If you have comps for Severson to add, I am all ears. I believe these are fair.

Makes sense, I'd say his closest comp in recent years would be Savard then. Look at what Tampa got for him and I think that's where you start with Severson

Severson like almost every other good UFA at the deadline before they hit the open market will return a mid to late 1st + B prospect + cap offset (not a dump like Drouin but an overpaid but still good player like Armia)

A 1st + prospect would be within the range depicted by the comps above.

Yes, the Risto/Savard prices could be lumped in here too (1st plus mid-pick). I’d argue Severson is different caliber of a player than those two, but both were overbought a bit.

Why would NSH trade for another defenseman? And how do they re-sign him even if they did? This deal makes no sense for NSH.

yes but it is a whole lot less than what you have the Habs and Sens paying. You are just trying to cause an argument hence the reason why you made an ACGM with such a wide variety of values. IF you were truly trying to show comps you would have narrowed it down to what his actual value was not this ridiculousness. I am done, have fun with your ridiculousness.

    It’s a comp. Not a trade offer.

Says the guy who believes Josh Anderson (!) is worth more than Slafkovsky.

But seriously, the whole point of a “comps” post is to show a wide range of possibilities. Of course, there are going to be bookends. Half these trades I wouldn’t want as Devils fan. But I included them.

    These are comps. Not offers.

It's a bad comp. Not realistic imo.
A better one would be the Manson trade. Helleson + 2nd.
