People seem to like this trade, I do not think the Leafs do it. Ethan Bear has been a healthy scratch and not playing well. Martin Necas has regressed every year since his outstanding rookie season. The 1st round pick will likely be on the 25-31 range. I don’t think that does it for Toronto

Me too considering canes fans wouldn’t even think to move necas for the majority of the year.

Think Necas is a bridge deal around 3.5-4m/yr and Bear’s QO is $2m. This means you get both players, and around 900,000 cap savings over WN.

Necas has scored pretty well the same amount of goals every season so far, his assists have gone down a touch. Not too concerned about it, we'd be saving at least a few million a year on the cap.

Bear being scratched when he's part of a deep defensive core isn't all that concerning either.

Yeah, that first would be late, but TOR could use that (or their own) first plus whatever else needs to be added to grab another player for the top 6.

Toronto's follow on move is taking those 2 1st plus some other stuff and getting Kane from Chicago at 50%. Then pay Arizona with Bear to take on the other 50%. Kane will make 2.9 million in real money. Arizona would take on 2.625 million of cap for 725K of real money. Now Toronto has become a juggernaut.

Bear probaly wouldn't cut it for them but if they can sign Necas for cheap and flip Bear elsewhere maybe something like this can happen, but yeah like someone said TO will ask for Pesce and the trade will end there. Bear wasn't great in Edmonton (he had really good nights and some really bad ones), it's fair to assume that's what the Leafs would get out if him regardless of his good or poor performance in Car. Edmonton's team build and play is more similar to Toronto's than Carolina.

I hate how much sense this makes. I don't particularly want another pass-first guy like Nylander, but this is so spot-on value-wise.

What is Nylander going to cost to extend? I think we would have to extend him at that price before getting the trade done.

As much as I love Necas and would hate to trade him, I think this is an agreeable deal for both sides. Ideally, if the Canes are able to work out the kinks in Nylander’s game he would improve so much. I’m not sure about Necas’s future with the Canes, but I don’t mind this. IMO the most ideal player to target would be Forsberg, but getting Nylander for a package like this would be fine.

the leafs need to add forwards, not trade them for lesser players. especially lesser players who wont be significantly cheaper. The leafs are trying to compete, not rebuild
