While Hertl has outplayed Monahan recently, he's clearly not more than two 1sts better.

I agree with this. As a Sharks fan, I would do the NJD or NYR I think. Both teams might have to add more possibly.

      Hertls points since 2018-2019:156

Im not saying Monahan is better but hertl is on a one year deal with no guarantee he is gonna resign in Calgary.
He also is not two firsts better than Monahan I would do one first+monahan for hertl at most as that first could possibly be top 15

Devils are not interested in this, Mercer is pretty close to untouchable at this point.

      (1) Devils would not re-sign Hertl, so would never pay the jacked up prices here 'assuming he re-signs'.
      (2) Devils are not in the market for one-year rentals
      (3) Devils don't need centers
      (4) Mercer is a stud (think, the Eklund of New Jersey).

Monahan has been awful recently, the extra first is to get rid of his cap hit though I see where you're coming from

most of us are Logical, we should get more for Hertl than some would think because
      1. Hertl is a top quality 2 way top 6 center under 30.
      2. Hertl has said San Jose is his home and he loves playing here.
      3. San Jose has stated they want to keep him and he is not available unless a ridiculous offer comes in.
      4. GM's get a little crazy at the deadline and someone will overpay because they want what they cant have!!!

even saying this I know that Sharks fans will always overvalue their own, and other teams fans will always undervalue what other teams have.
this is why there are so many variations of the HERTL trades

I agree with this except for #2. I don't think teams are increasing the package because he likes SJ.

Based on the team's prospect depth, and those large, aging contracts on defense, maybe selling him for an overpay at the deadline (say, Boston?) would be the best case scenario

These are all crazy overpays. He’s a good second line center rental.

Something to think back on, remember the mark stone deal? Clearly way way way better than Hertl, and was one of the few trades where both sides seemed to have a pretty good idea there would be an extension. Prospect and a 2nd.

#2 is accurate because he isn't DEMANDING a trade, if a player is disgruntled or demanding a trade his value drops because other GM worry he might be difficult to please.

Actually we have a solid Prospect pool, but we lack a future 1C or 1RD and Burns/ Karlsson and Couture are old and getting older and we only have 1-2 more years before none of these 3 are considered top line/ top pairing candidates (for most this has already happened, but they are still quality players... for now) so if we can get a young potential 1C or top pair RD for hertl I say we do it.

A lot of sites and hockey writers have SJ ranked in the bottom-10 prospect pools in the league. But yeah securing a potential top-6 centre or top-pairing RD would be stellar if a team is willing

If it came with an extension then I honestly don't see an issue with the package from the Rangers. Hertl is stronger than a 2C and the Mark Stone deal was always an underpay to begin with; he is a much stronger player in Vegas then in Ottawa. It really should have been a 1st and Brannstrom (an A prospect, I'd say that approximately matches Chytil in this deal).

From there you could maybe make an argument for Kravtsov being too good of an asset, but I doubt a 1st and Chytil cuts it.

Oh hands down if it came with a good extension value, NYR gives that package away all day long. Their top-6 would be a thing of dreams.

Chytil and a first is a big time overpay.

I just don’t understand how someone can look at the rental market of the past decade, look at hertl and say it could be the equivalent of multiple firsts. First and a 3rd, maybe with a kicker. Just like always.

      SJS
      Brännström, Erik
      Greig, Ridly
      Brown, Connor
      OTT
      Hertl

This isn't happening, Greig is probably Ottawa's best prospect after Sanderson, and in a deep pool as Ottawa has, that's impressive. Adding Brannstrom and Brown just isn't happening, lol

Yeah.. Wheeler from The Athletic has them at 22nd, so does The Hockey Writers. Many people have them on the cusp of the bottom-10 and that's after a successful draft year.

Chytil and a first is a big time overpay.

I just don’t understand how someone can look at the rental market of the past decade, look at hertl and say it could be the equivalent of multiple firsts. First and a 3rd, maybe with a kicker. Just like always.

I don't see how Tomas Hertl isn't worth a 1st + strong kicker if he's got an extension coming on top of it. Though I guess your package proposal along the lines of our Kevin Hayes deal to Winnipeg (who's actually a 2C), I'm still skeptical. Maybe something like 1st + 3rd + Kravtsov?
