7x7m is the right deal!
The trigger fingers were predicting 6x9.5m and waiting to pounce lol. Piles are an aggressive, solid team and he fits. Remember, Barzal, window, NY taxes, instead of trading kids, hard to find free stars, especially a team like Piles. Why should they care about yr 6 or 7? In fact I hate it as a NYR, which answers the riddle</div></div>
I’m holding up a red flag for year 4 let alone 6 and 7. That’s not even halfway through this mammoth deal. We’re gonna love it as much as that terrible JG Pageau contract.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Fox_Czar_Cup</b></div><div>Right. Apples & oranges. GMs passed on Buch 4x 5.8m. Chytil is a big young C, that takes time obviously, and will be 2/3C 3x 4m ish. GMs would line up. Plus people sleep on Blais, Johnson is not that great of a prospect and might not even sign with BUF.</div></div>
What makes you so certain that those said GMs won't do the same with Chytil at said 3x 4m ish, ESPECIALLY if it's a 3C? They don't line up like ducks.
Furthermore, this is a trade involving salary casualties for the Rangers just like Buchie was.
And where are you hearing that rumor about Johnson? Not saying you're wrong here, but him not signing is, well, news to me. I was merely looking for a LD prospect with 1st round pedigree (kinda like how the Rangers got Tony DeAngelo from Arizona for Stepan)

If you think you're correct and I'm not then you were in a coma during June and July. Nazem Kadri could not have had a bigger consensus to receive way more than he deserves because of how good he was in his contract year.

Well yeah but like, that’s not exactly the type of contract you want to give out in win-now mode in my opinion. A short term deal with even higher AAV than $7M would’ve been excellent for the Islanders, not this.

He only had 31 points last year, that’s not worth 4.8 mil. The potential is still there, but he needs to show he’s worth it to get Paid.</div></div>
Jack Hughes also had 31 points in his sophomore year (he played 1068 minutes that season and Lafreniere played 1105 last year, so it's a lot closer than the game difference suggests). If the Rangers start giving Lafreniere bigger roles then I don't think he'd have to improve "significantly" to earn $4.8 mil.

The contract comparison I had in mind was Drake Batherson. Laffy and Miller’s contracts are very difficult for everyone to predict right now though.

Option 1 Buying out Jacob Trouba
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>NYR1983</b></div><div>So you think Trouba and Pionk are the same player if you remove goals and assists? I think you’re dearly underestimating what Trouba brings. And dearly underestimating how Drury will value him. I don’t even need to look up the stats on blocked shots or hits and know that it’s not close.</div></div>
No no, that’s not what I said. They obviously play different styles of hockey. The value to their teams, on the other hand, stay pretty equal to each other. Trouba brings the far superior defence but Pionk brings the far superior puck control and speed.
To be clear, I think Jacob Trouba is a better hockey player than Ryan Lindgren for instance, because of how one dimensional the latter is. Yet, this ACGM with Trouba absent looks much stronger and more organized than the one with Lindy absent. Someone is getting casted off and we have a cluster of right defencemen.

Oh I 100% agree about going with retention over a buyout and that he isn’t dead weight. His money is just so cumbersome and teams are going to know in trade negotiation that Trouba is leaving the Rangers no matter what.
Idk if you’re a football fan, but I feel like I watched this exact scenario already unfold with my Cowboys and Amari Cooper.

Option 1 Buying out Jacob Trouba
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>NYR1983</b></div><div>If Trouba was on PP1 and has 5G and 20A more we probably wouldn’t be claiming he is over paid. He’s got a lot of value. 8M for what he bring NYR, yes overpaid, worth 6.5-7M to NYR as is.. yup. But if we didn’t have Fox he would be way more glorified with PP points. Buyout is unlikely, but worst case scenario…sure.. slight retention and asking him to waive would be the most likely way it would go down. But again, he brings value that isn’t in the box scores. Even a lot of rangers fans can’t recognize value outside of “points” or analytics graphs.</div></div>
Ehh if Trouba were PP1 and accrued those stats, he’s still (only) 2019-21 Neal Pionk, who received $5.75M aav.
And as I’ve repeatedly stated Jacob Trouba is a great player that I would want to have on my team. But if you visit my ACGM “Someones getting sacrificed…” you’ll see that the Rangers need to pick between him and duos like Chytil + Lindgren.
I also really think you’re underestimating the probability of a buyout. Minnesota’s buyouts of Parise and Suter were 3x costlier and they last two more years than this one would.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Isles5513</b></div><div>Just going to leave this here. If Trouba was willing to waive he would be easy to move.
https://www.nhl.com/news/pk-subban-traded-to-new-jersey-by-nashville/c-307989140</div></div>
The return could be closer to the one Subban received, but with a flat cap world I disagree that it would be as easy to move Trouba. In addition, PK didn’t have any trade clauses so it’s contingent on Trouba waiving, as you alluded to.
It’s also been reported that teams wanted a 1st round pick plus more from Columbus, just to take on the contract of Jakub Voracek. He’s in the same boat as Trouba if you ask me (effective player but horribly overpaid) but with only two years of term compared to JT’s three.

Well I can definitely agree Detroit wins this trade by far lol. Maybe the PK Subban trade, like <a href="/users/Isles5513" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">@Isles5513</a> suggested, is a better comparison but it should be no secret that the return for Jacob Trouba will be a rather paltry one.
