I think its a bit of a gamble, but likely not a terrible one. I don't think he's worth this yet, I think he's worth likely about a mil less (perhaps about 6.5). But I think taking the gamble on an improving guy in his early 20s, to improve a bit more is reasonable, when the risk of not doing it, is he takes another step this year and asks for 9+.
For an example, apparently the Marner camp offered the Leafs 9 million for 8 years BEFORE the 2018/2019 season. That sounds crazy to me to have considered that after he came off a 69 point season (and 9 points in 7 playoff games). Of course one year later, they damn well wish they had signed him for it, as he went and had a 94 point season and the Leafs gave him 10.9 for 6 years...
Still, I would have thought they could keep it at 7 or less.
I wish I could have voted "okay", neither good nor bad...
