It's not really a loophole, it's just accrued cap space.

You make sound like only the Leafs can get this 5m "present." That is one terrible trade just to acquire the middling to good Hall for half a season and bare NHLer Mittlestaat

Not only the Leafs can but it certainly helps them. I don't think Hall is "middling", he's two seasons removed from a hart trophy.

If you want to calculate it yourself do it like this (basically I don't want to calculate it but I can give you the outline of how to easily):

Step 1 - Divide the cap ceiling (81.5M) by the numbers of days in this season (January 13th to April something). *this is the maximum cap you can spend per day*
Step 2 - Divide the teams cap post camp roster (or what you expect it to be) by the number of days in the season. *this is the cap your team is paying per day*
Step 3 - Subtract your teams "cap per day" from the "maximum cap per day." *this will give you the amount of cap space you accrue per day*
Step 4 - Take the "accrued cap per day" from Step 3 and multiply it by the amount of days until the Trade Deadline. *this will give you the total accrued cap space by the TDL*

This will give your total accrued cap space by the TDL
*should be noted that this assumes zero injuries and zero roster changes

I'll play along with your situation. I'd rather keep Mittelstadt with Buffalo and instead of all those pieces coming back, I'll ask for Sandin and one of Abramov or Hirvonen. Maybe also a conditional pick based off the Leafs' performance in the playoffs. Say a 3rd that becomes a 2nd if they reach quarters, and a 1st if they reach cup finals

Bruh what... sandin and hirvonen?? Hall didn’t cost that much during the middle of the season last year, why would he cost that much at the TDL on an expiring contract. Dubas would be fired for even considering that

Tbh the value on that trade is pretty good.

Hall = 1st + Hirvonen + 3rd
Casey = Abramov + Korchkov + a 3rd

Issue is; leafs don’t need hall. In a vacuum trade looks decent though

Arizona certainly are regretting trading for Hall. Coyotes got worse with him. Can't see Hall being a difference maker at all.

If he’s lighting it up in Buffalo but they’re still out of a playoff spot, you will see him get traded for a nice package. After all he absolutely carried his team in 2017/18. The talent is there

Some leafs fans like yourself:
“Holl is a good top 4 D”

Leafs haters:
“Holl is a 6/7th D”

In reality:
Holl is a bottom pairing D but paired with Muzzin he’s a fine #4.

weeger is a clear upgrade. There is absolutely no debate about that.

This debate is just hands down stupid. Holl costs the Leafs nothing and with Muzzin he was a very good shutdown, Big, Right Handed defenceman, who can skate very well, handle the puck, and pass well enough. At 2 million, he is also cheap. Getting Weegar will cost assets and what we would hope is he finds equal chemistry with Muzzin to be exactly what Holl is right now. So why even bother? Weegar isn't an all-star, he isn't overly big either. He's just another IT player on this site, sure he's a good hockey player but he doesn't move the needle anymore than Holl, he would be a complimentary piece, nothing more.

I honestly dont know what we get at the deadline cause we got wing depth, center depth, and even defense and goalie depth.

Really only thing I can see is maybe Demers from arizona with retention or something but really they have no need for anything

Not in their division they won't be. Which is unfortunate. How unlucky it is for them to go from one tough division to another with even more good teams.

I suppose if we are rolling big time, maybe going for a big gun like Hall would make some sense but I agree, I just don't see a lot of need. Injuries though could force the hand.
