The ballots have to be handed in halfway through the third period. The outcome is not normally in doubt at that point, but it could have gone either way this year.

This shows that the NHL doesn't really want voters to care who wins and just award it to the best player in the playoffs. We've even seen a vote recently for a player who didn't make the finals (2017 Karlsson)

Barkov shut down 3 of the games best. Then shutdown McDavid for 4/7 games.

If Barkov won it and Edmonton won the cup it would've felt wrong. The fact they had to vote before the game ended had voters hetching their bets, I imagine some voters would've swapped their votes if they knew the result.
