I say this on KJ trade proposals to MTL all the time, but it applies here: CBJ and MTL aren't good trade partners. We need similar things (high-end talent, especially among forwards), have similar things (a lot of young players and vets who are middle-6 or bottom-6 options at the moment, as well as full prospect cupboards, and a logjam of defensemen), and have similar timelines to compete (2-3 years).
If you believe Columbus is still 5+ years away from competing, then maybe it makes sense to grab a bad contract and some picks, but I don't think anyone in or around Columbus believes that. We need top-end talent, so we're not trading a Laine (whose value is down anyway, and we should just keep in hopes of a bounceback) or a KJ or any other young forward unless it's a 1-for-1 hockey trade of similar players, or part of a package for a legitimate upgrade.
