Tanev is good, Murphy is just the best on a terrible team. McCabe is better and he isn't a top pair defenceman

I think if physical is the answer then Murphy is the better choice of the 2 a couple mentioned . Tanev is stronger defensive but both would be good. Just not sure Tanev would really offer much different then Brodie did. It is so hard to try and decide this because TML have literally thrown at least 10 different partners with Rielly and only Schenn has looked ok with him. Really starting to wonder if it is not just Rielly.

A couple years back Ron Hainsey was our top pair defense with Rielly so ya the TML partners for Rielly have been a frigging joke! When are the management going to wake up and actually get a real 1st pair defense?

He worked well with Brodie, Schenn and Lilly… Also, you can’t blame him when he had Gardiner, Barrie, Holl, Hainsey and Lyubushkin as his other line mates

Maybe Lilly will be the top pairing d-man and the leafs will be looking for a 3rd pairing physical guy which won't cost as much. Someone like Lauzon from Nashville who plays both sides and is physical.
