The Nylander problem

Description
Nylander is my favourite player so I don’t want to trade him but if he’s not going to re-sign for an amount Toronto can do, might as well get value. With Beniers, I could see Wright be tradeable by the Kraken, for the right price. Nylander is in his prime and fits their suddenly competitive timeline, and provides real top line scoring. Leaves Toronto with a ton of cap space to work with next season

Why would the Leafs give up Nylander w extension for only Shane Wright? The only player on the Kraken I'd think about doing Nylander w extension for 1 for 1 is Beniers

I may be the only one who thinks this but I think Seattle says no. There's reason to make that trade. Why rush the "Rebuild" and trade your 19 year old center for someone whose in their prime. I understand Wright could end up not being as good as Nylander but the positional value and the contract they'd have to give to Nylander doesn't make it worth it in my eyes. Yes, if they make this move, their window is closer, but I also think it shortens it as Nylander is so much older. (Not a Seattle fan btw)

The Nylander problem.? It's not a a problem and really a silly scenario dreamt up by Leaf fans. Why would the Kraken trade years of control of Wright, for one year of Nylander.
Why not trade Matthews.....he hasn't resigned either
Go over the list of upcoming UFAs in 2024..... by your logic they should all be traded
Since the Leafs are in a win mode in 23/24, highly unlikely they are going to weaken their team for futures.

Hawks decline. If that's all it took to move Murray, he'd be gone already.

Gee, I don't you're the only one. Gotta think almost all NHL GMs think the same. Most logical CF ins would say the same thing. Point is Nylander is a UFA next summer and certainly the Kraken. much better keeping Wright, and spend 6m or so on a short term UFA this year instead of obtaining Nylander.

There just isn’t a nylander problem. The only ‘problem’ the leafs have this year is getting under the cap, and lots of time for that. And lots of time to work out a deal with Willy (& Matty); they both want to be here so it’ll all get worked out.

8.8 mil over cap. 3.2 with Muzzin on LTIR. Samsonov not yet signed. So you think teams are going to do the Leafs favours to help them get under the cap? Seems you're the one smoking the good sh*t!

The league should do favours for the leafs (highest revenue generator) but no worries bud, piece of cake to get under the cap. I think your gm is the one indulging. Preds gave Johansen away for nothing, even retained 50% - dude is washed but you got him for two more years 👍

While I don't see a ton of sense in Seattle straying from the course by sacrificing their limited young depth for a win now player, I see even less sense in a clearly built for 2023-24 Maple Leafs team trading one of their pending UFAs for a guy that hasn't shown much at the NHL level.

If anything, pay the cost to move Murray - the Josh Bailey dump showed that teams will take that far-off pick if that's all you have, so cough up the 2026 2nd if that's what it takes to get Murray off. Bury Reaves or Timmins and then you can run a 22 man roster while giving Ilya Samsonov 1x$2.5M on a bridge deal.

If Samsonov repeats his performance this year, then yeah, you wind up stuck with the bag on his next deal, but it's worth it IMO. Run with your best lineup this year and deal with the fallout next summer when you've only got about $40.5M committed to the cap.

What exactly is this "hellhole" you speak of? The Leafs have close to $50m in space for next year as it stands. They can afford a $10m extension for Nylander under the cap with no problems whatsoever. The real question is whether they want to pay him that much or not.

'The league should do favours for the Leafs' so no, not everything you wrote was correct. Utterly delusional if you think that's gonna happen! Your team is currently 8.8 mil in the red with Samsonov still to sign, still 3.2 in the red with Muzzin on LTIR, even with all the ELCs sent down still 684k in the red and unable to run a full roster. Sure they can get out of it, but if you expect other teams to do you favours in the proces you'll be very disappointed......and only time will tell if RyJo is washed.

The league should do favours for the leafs is an opinion; one that I feel is fair as the highest revenue team in the league. Teams that generate more revenue (Leafs, Rangers, Habs, Bruins) should be able to spend more than teams that don’t. That’s just my opinion but I think most agree the current hard cap system is broken. Leafs aren’t the only team over the cap , but again - o worries they’ll figure it out and it won’t cost Willy to do so

It would be an interesting trade scenario.

Not too different from Vegas trading Suzuki to the Canadiens for Patches. They found themselves as a more competitive team much earlier than expected and traded a highly touted prospect for a top line winger.

Not saying either side should or would...but it's not a crazy thought.

The "Nylander Problem" is that no GM in his right mind would trade a host of significant assets for one year of Nylander. Therefore, the acquiring GM would have to have started negotiations with Nylander and his advisors over a new contract before being able to decide whether acquiring him made any sense at all, and so far, there have been absolutely no reports that Treliving has given other teams permission to talk to Nylander or his agent.

That was the price for Bailey when he was able to be bought out. The buyout window is closed now. So that is $6M in real cash someone would have to pay Murray. Your cost to move Murray has gone up unfortunately.

Not at all. I have no real feelings either way where the Leafs are concerned. If anything I dislike them a little simply because of their mostly obnoxious fan base, but otherwise no more or less than any other team.
