The contract is 1 year too long.
AAV doesn't matter much in this case.
When you put together their series of moves, they basically traded Duchene and Johansen for O'Reilly and Schenn. The buyout and the retention opened up the cap space to sign these two at a similar term to when the original players. would have been on the books. This points to a major culture shift both on and off the ice. They are trying to add big or hard to play against players who are strong veterans in the room.
The cap goes up dramatically 2 years from now. This seems to be a mix of a rebuild and retool for Nashville. If they get 1 good season out of Schenn, I'm fine with this move. By good season, I don't mean just on the ice. Culturally in the room and with how they play on the ice.
They have a former long time coach as their new GM. They just brought in a generational character guy in Mark Borowiecki in an off-ice role. It's pretty clear what direction they are working in.
