Montreal Canadiens signed Samuel Montembeault (3 Years / $3,150,000 AAV)
While I do think you could and many teams have done worse with goalie deals, I just don't see a 3,15m goalie here. He's a quality backup being paid like a 1B. And while I'm well aware that the league average save percentage has cratered in the last 10 years, that 91 is still just barely above average and won't last.

Steeeeep price for a 36yo but with how few games he missed last year and how well he produced, there's really nothing wrong with it. If his knee explodes or something similar, well, tough ****.

Ridiculous he couldn't get paid. I don't give a rat's ass what his playoff production is, you need steady reliable producers and possession guys in the reg season too. Hilarious underpay.

Toronto Maple Leafs signed Auston Matthews (4 Years / $13,250,000 AAV)
The money is actually reasonable, imo. The big wtf is the term. If you asked me, it makes no sense for the player or the team. They don't lock him up for term, and while he gets another shot at a massive 7 or 8 year deal at 30, that always carries risk of an injury derailing his career. Weird deal.

The legend whose career refuses to die. I love these career 3rd//4th goalies who pull off 10-15 year careers by being just about good enough.

(PIT/MTL/SJS) - Granlund, Rutta, Petry, DeSmith, Légaré, 2024 1st (PIT), 2025 2nd (PIT) for Pitlick, Hoffman for Karlsson, Hamaliuk, 2026 3rd (SJS)
I just can't make sense of this trade for the Pens or the Sharks. Beautiful job by Hughes though. I understand that Rutta, Hoffman and, in an optimistic view Granlund too, are day trading assets they can turn into picks later on, but that's relying on them staying healthy and producing for them to attract buyers. Seems like a very weak return. On the Pens side, this is of course beautiful job by Dubas paying basically nothing to acquire a superstar, but with the team's age structure it is basically Stanley Cup next season or bust. Again, beautifully handled by Montreal for their part.

By default not a good contract because it's TDA. I don't care by this point. Everywhere he's gone, he's either been a disgusting human being, a locker room cancer or clashed with the coaching staff. Also Torts didn't lie(or exaggerate for once) when he said TDA can't play defense. And on top of all that, he's a bit of a powerplay merchant too.
Just too many risks and factors against him by this point imo. Even if he has learned to keep his mouth shut in the public.

*In an extremely annoying nerd voice*
Actually the Knights win this trade because they traded the last pick and Columbus' next year's pick will certainly be earlier in the 7th round, thus increasing their chances of hitting by 0.000000001%!

I don't see a reason to hate this deal. Yeah it's overpay for like 400k but that's not bad. He'd gotten more on the open market. Also these are all prime years they're buying. Excellent two-way center who can play basically any bottom-six positions when needed.

How did they get a 2nd? There's no way he's worth that unless Avs already have a deal in place to extend him at below 1m, and even then hardly.

I think this exact player type is the one that sees the greatest difference between European vs NA rink size. The playstyle is so vastly different, a player who has basically nothing but raw skill can thrive in EU. Much harder, if not impossible in NA.

For Jesse, this is a wait and see-situation. However it astonishes me how long the Oilers waited. If they traded him in the summer, they could have gotten at least something. Puistola is a really long shot by this point. Basically nothing.
