My guess is Perry sets a career high in PIMs this season. Anyone looks at Bedard wrong will get a stick to the throat.

I imagine the conversation went something like this KD- "Corey, we'd really like you to play for us next season and give us some veteran leadership" Perry-"**** no, I want to win another cup" KD-"I'll give you 4 million dollars" Perry-"where do I sign?"

I've never felt more like an NHL GM before, used to do this all the time on NHL GM mode: trade everything not tied down and then fill the lineup with vets on big 1 years deals that I would also trade at the deadline.

Obviously it’s an over pay but CHI needs to get to the cap floor and he is a good vet to help Bedard. No issues with this for CHI.

In the summer of cap is king this and the Foligno signing are very bad. I get that they will fill a role of grit to protect Bedard and leadership. I get they have to get to the cap floor. Neither of those excuse these extraordinary overpay. Cap has massive value. They could have optimized that value better and gotten other tough customers for cheaper

Why did they give up a pick for him? Did they think some other team would even offer half of this?

They're still projected to have 14-15 million in cap space with a 23 man roster. They're also looking for specific leadership type players. Actual dollars are irrelevant to the Hawks org, they were still a revenue giant despite being a lottery team last year, so these players cost them virtually nothing, Could easily do another Bailey style deal if there's one available.

Cap is still cap. They have lots of room, but less. Perhaps they could have taken on Wheeler and a pick instead of the buyout. We have seen things like Taylor Hall given away (to them no less). Wasting cap is wasteful.

It would be way less expensive to buy Bedard's some ex-hockey stars books to read or something.

There's no guarantee that those moves are even available, especially since we didn't see much movement at the draft. If I'm Winnipeg, I'm not paying to move Wheeler when he has a very manageable buyout and there's probably not much on the market for them to improve this year anyway, LA only paid a second to move an AHL goalie making 2 x $5m. Johansen didn't cost anything to move. Hayes only cost cap retention for a team starting a rebuild. Vancouver is supposedly out of the cap dump game after buying out OEL. If these moves were available to make they likely would've been made by now, and the Hawks can still make them if one does become available.

Can you imagine being Corey Perry at this stage in your career and your agent says you have a 4 million dollar deal lined up?

You’d think for the money being spent they could have signed Toews and Kane to mentor the kid for a year… wow.
