Bruins are not going to trade Carlo right now unless the return is amazing (i.e., the other team would need to be willing to clearly lose the trade). It would kill the Bruins defense, which is already starting to flounder.
If the Bruins start to play well again, I agree with <a href="/users/Celtics21" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">@Celtics21</a> that they won't be trading Ullmark in-season. If their freefall continues for a <strong>long</strong> time and they drop out of the playoff hunt, then we could talk about trading Ullmark. I don't think it would be a big package deal though unless it included one of our expiring UFAs.

I think that is not enough for Hertl, and I am not sure why we would spend limited resources (high-end prospects and high-ish round picks) to get expiring UFAs on D and in the bottom 6F. The Bruins' prospect cupboard would be absolutely bone dry after these moves, and I don't think it pushes them over the top even if they could get Hertl for that return.

off season trade
Ok, I know that people say that goalies always trade for less than fans expect, but if Ullmark only nets some 6th round draft pick that hasn't shown anything in the AHL yet, then that would be awful. We don't know what this kid will be yet, but all of the risk in this trade is on the Bruins side. They've got to be able to do better than that, otherwise its not worth getting rid of Ullmark.
Personally, I would also sign JDB, but I know there are plenty of Bruins fans that are put off by his streaky goal scoring.

Have you considered firing Tony D into the Sun instead? I'm not sure if he'll still count against the cap or not, but I wouldn't mind if the Bruins tossed you a 7th for doing it.

Dude... that return for Carlo. Why on Earth would Boston choose to make their defense worse with an old player on an expiring contract in return for a prospect that cannot stay in the NHL and a 4th round pick? And this is in division too... yikes.

If the Leafs FO would just give him the 10m he asked for, then of course he will. If they keep delaying trying to get him in the 8-9m range, he might just decide to test free agency. Considering how stellar his play has been this season, his price is probably going up with each passing game.
I doubt the Bruins would actually offer him 11m with so many big contracts already on the books, but if Treliving+Shanahan continue to hold firm at not going to 10m, I am sure some decent team in the league would be willing to offer him 11m. Why would he not choose to take that?

This move would completely cannibalize Boston's current strengths and the prospect pool at forward with no high-end picks in sight. It's not worth it for one player. This isn't the NBA.

I think Boston would do that, particularly if Lindholm's AAV was likely to be that low. However, the cap won't work on Boston's side as currently proposed.

Fixing the oilers
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>McGruff</b></div><div>In my ACGM, <strong>Ullmark </strong>is an asset I want to weaponize now and go w/ Sway-Bussi.
For LU, get back a playoff gamer like Hyman or another 'alpha'-player on any club that needs a move/re-set/change of scenery etc. and preferably age/contract that fits the same developing re-set/re-tool window that is:
Pasta/Mac/Lind/Carlo/Sway/Zacha/Potty/Lohrei etc.</div></div>
I personally wouldn't do that, but it is a logical strategy that they could pursue. Unless they fall out of the playoff picture, I'd rather see them trade Ullmark in the offseason, if at all. And I'd rather see them get back high end picks or a blue-chip prospect. I think they can probably sign a high-end vet UFA wing in the offseason, particularly if the swap out Ully's salary for Bussi's.

Fixing the oilers
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>McGruff</b></div><div>Bruins are playing really well and Carlo is a huge part of that.
They are in WIN now mode (like EDM should be) and aren't going to make backward trades like <em>Ceci </em>or "<em>future favours</em>" to other NHL clubs for a stud-RD-piece.
If it's to happen, BOS wants a simple deal:
Quality NHLer for same. Think "goal for centre swap" or "Goal/D-man for a gritty top-6 RW" - got any of those?
PS: 20 players should get you to WC#3 spot, enjoy...</div></div>
I personally don't think Boston is in win-now mode, but I think they are trying to get back to that position as quickly as possible. Win-now teams are willing to trade away futures to improve for the current season, and I think that doesn't apply to Boston.
With that in mind, I think Boston is trying to get back to win-now mode within the next 2 seasons. I agree they won't be trading Carlo or any other young-ish foundational players with term left. He should still be under his current contract when they do enter win-now mode. I also doubt that Boston will trade a goalie in-season. Both of those guys are the main reason why the team is doing so well, but it will be hard for <strong>both</strong> of them to maintain this high level of play across the full season.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>KingofRnR</b></div><div>Especially when we looking at Teams like EDM & TOR, I think it’s much better to have that $$$ invested in Defence
It’s a much faster game that caters to younger forwards anyways, so staying young and revolving forwards, while having the best D-Corp in the League who can also provide offence seems like the best way to go AFAIC </div></div>
Yes, I think in general building from the net out has worked well for Boston, and they should keep doing it. But one has to strike a balance somewhere.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>KingofRnR</b></div><div>Look at My Calgary Flames for example lol. Their best players are their <$1mil/yr Rookies, not their over paid Stars</div></div>
This probably wasn't your point, but I think this kind of exemplifies what I am thinking in terms of the last spot in Boston's top 4D. They could either go with an expensive known quantity and give up assets to get it (Hanafin), or they could roll the dice with Lohrei and keep more cap space free for the next ~6 years. Lohrei doesn't need to reach Hanafin's level for the move to pay off if they can use that salary to improve their scoring. With that said, Lohrei does need to improve his defensive game for the move to actually work out. I don't think the Bruins are in win-now mode, so I'd rather roll the dice.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>KingofRnR</b></div><div>Agreed. I just wonder if they’d prefer Hanifin (who’s very young for a Defensemen and has a very long career ahead of him yet) & Lindholm as their Top-LD’s over an what’s realistically an Unproven Prospect doing well on a Sting Team and Grz
If the answer to the above is yes, for sure I could see them finally securing Hanifin, which is something they’ve been rumoured to want for a very long time</div></div>
I just don't see it. Hanafin makes ~$5m now, and he is entering his prime. What will his next contract be? Let's say that on the low end he will make at least $6.5m AAV, although I am admittedly completely making that number up. Boston would then have a top 4 D making $9.5m, $6.5m, $6.5m, and $4.1m. I have no problem with the defense-first roster construction, but that would be ~30% of the cap tied up in 4 defenders. I personally think that is too much, and they need to allocate some of the cap space that will free up to the forward group and improve their ability to score. Others may disagree.

There is fair value in a vacuum, and then there is actual value, which is based on need/demand. There is certainly league-wide demand for Hanafin, but Boston's need for another top-end defenseman is low. I cannot imagine a realistic situation where Boston gives up any 1st rounders or top prospects for Hanafin, because their need for improving their prospect pipeline far outweighs the need for more elite defenders. Maybe its just me, but the only way I see Boston trading for defense is for 3rd pair or depth beyond that.

I made a lengthy explanation on one of your posts yesterday about how the Bruins likely wouldn't trade Poitras for just about anything due to his potential, his long term low cost, and the Bruins needs. And yet you think they will trade both him and their best defensive prospect along with a 1st round pick for an expiring Noah Hanafin? Is the plan to ignore comments on this thread too and make an even more ridiculous post tomorrow?

<s>Why are you retaining on Zadorov, trading him, and putting him in your lineup? Are you retaining half of his body in addition to half of his salary? It looks like he can play either side, so you probably don't need to quibble too much over which half you keep.</s>
Anaheim is retaining, got it finally. My newborn won't let me sleep at night. :(

To me it seems extremely unlikely that the Bruins would accept anything for Poitras. He looks like he will be a legit top 6 C, and he still is still under team control for as long as an active player possibly can be. They also entered the season with center as their biggest position of need. In a year where they are supposedly retooling, it would be extremely foolish to give him up to chase any UFAs, particularly those who will command much higher salaries and who will be over 30 soon.
Lysell could possibly be had, but I think the Bruins would probably only be interested in either Lindholm (where Lysell alone won't be enough) or depth F/D (where Lysell is probably too much). I also personally hope the Bruins don't give up any more high-round picks, and if the Bruins FO agrees, then I think there may just not be a great match between the teams in terms of assets they'd be willing to trade and fair value for the players in question.

Why split up Zacha and Pasta? Also, what is the rationale behind pairing Forbort and Carlo? They are solid on the PK, but they would be an offensive black hole of a pairing at 5v5.

Trade Deadline Experiment
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Celtics21</b></div><div>Great. Hopefully you find a team that thinks the same. Boston is going to be in a position to sign a player outright without giving up anything. Even if they did, my guess is it wouldn’t be Laine</div></div>
Right, this is my thinking too. Laine still has term, but in this case that is a bad things for the Bruins. I don't think I'd want to tie up 8.7m for the next two years unless it is for a center. I'm not trying to crap on Laine as much as saying I think the opportunity cost of bringing him in is too high. There will be decent UFA wings available in the offseason and Boston will have cap space, but they wouldn't be able to even consider bringing any of them in.

Trade Deadline Experiment
The Bruins should not spend any 1st or 2nd round picks this year, period. They should not trade any prospects that project to be in the top 6 unless it is a swap for other prospects that project to be in the top 6. Despite their current record, this is not the year to go all in. Maybe they can make some fringe moves to add depth using picks in the 3rd round or later.

It seems extremely unlikely that Swayman or Ullmark will move in-season unless something really big changes. The coach has already (fairly accurately) stated that the primary reason the Bruins keep winning is their goaltending, and he has also already stated that his plan in the playoffs this year would be some kind of goalie rotation.

Bruins are trying to open a new contention window, but trying to bring in Tavares would reek of them desperately trying to keep their existing window open. It would be a bad long term move.
Also, I don't think the Bruins are interested in making a division rival better in a year where they are on target to make the playoffs themselves. And as <a href="/users/Kinger25" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">@Kinger25</a> said, Tavares won't waive.

Pens need changes mainly a consistent goalie
Malkin is excellent, but he is 37 with some tough miles on him, and he has missed many games in the last 5 seasons due to injury. His contract is not exactly cheap considering the risk that he could either get injured or fall off at any point now is fairly high. If the Bruins were to trade Ully, I'd rather have them seek assets to be better in the long term than a trade like this which could completely blow up in their face.

I don't see Boston going after Nelson for strategic reasons. He's still a great player in my book, but he's 32 and he only has one year left after this. Signing him again would be a risk due to his age and likely high cap hit. Also, despite the current standings, I don't think the Bruins are in a position to make an all-in push this year or next, so trying to win it all on his current contract would be a bit of a long-shot.

Bruins don't really need Nosek since Beecher is panning out as a rookie, but if Beecher got injured I could definitely see them doing this for a 6th. Even if they somehow manage to lead the NHL, I expect a quiet deadline from the Bruins this year due to their lack of picks and their cap situation, which probably means depth targets at F and D.
