Not necessarily. Since it's a mutual termination at least he saved the $2,5M of cap moving him half-retained would've cost them. Now they got rid of him for free.

Seravalli says it's a buyout, other insiders say it's mutual termination. Seems unclear.

The fun thing is, if it was a buyout, Deangelo would, if I recall correctly, become the first player ever to be bought out twice tears of joy

EDIT: buyout it is, confirmed also by Friedman. LMAO

That's fair, and getting rid of TDA is certainly addition by subtraction. Just weird considering they supposedly had something lined up with Carolina

Canes probably decided against TDA since they're in the Karlsson sweepstakes.

It's an L, although they now have more cap space than they would've at 50% retention, and didn't use a retention spot which is useful. They were rumored too be getting Massimo Rizzo who is a decent prospect but nothing special.

The bigger L is the cap charge next year but we aren't spending to the cap anyway so it's not overly important.

I don't think there is a possible win here honestly, I would've prefered to keep him but I have to assume he did something to truly piss off someone important.

Kuzy wants out of Washington. This is the perfect opportunity for us to clear cap and get a big ticket item.

You’re expecting to get a big ticket item? Seems like he won’t be getting much more than future considerations

I meant in a separate deal because we have more cap space to work with. That’s what holding bmac back from making moves

I’d be shocked if any team took on his full contract without sending another player back to balance cap hits. Not many teams have 8 mil lying arohnd to use on an underperforming player like Kuznetsov

Our team was screwed by injuries last year. I agree he isn’t the most consistent player but he can still produce and be a 1c.

It's not really up to the league. The league has that rule because of their agreement with CHL teams.

We used to draft kids at age 20. When they began the process of lowering that age to something much lower, the CHL basically demanded an agreement saying the NHL wouldn't scalp all the younger kids and turn them pro. In affect they said, "well, if you want to draft the people we have rights to, then if you can't use them at the NHL level, you have to play them here."
NHL has agreements (yes, legal agreements drawn up by attorneys) with many leagues regarding player rights and contracts, transfers, etc.

Being mad at the league is barking up the wrong tree. The fight would be with the CHL.

There are several reasons why this rule sucks for the NHL, but that is the agreement they made with the CHL, which basically saved junior hockey in Canada.

And the intent is that the rule stays exactly as is, but that intelligent people can understand that in extremely rare circumstances, such as simultaneous exceptional player status and a global pandemic, that it is ignored without gnashing of teeth.

There have been I believe 7 exceptional player status given out ever? There has been one global pandemic in our lifetimes.

If those scenarios do not allow somebody to make the proper decision in this case, and that the contract must be followed as written, that’s exactly why the NHL is struggling relative to every peer.

Sometimes you have to make the best decision despite the fact that historically you haven’t. Removing any ability to do that only guarantees that you won’t make good decisions.

Yeah, the NHL following it's legal agreement without unilaterally breaking it doesn't seem like the root of all it's ills to me. Take your beef up with the CHL. NHL GM's would love to be able to put CHL draftees into the AHL. The league would love it. They can't.

Hm, not sure why I thought he was bought out twice. Maybe mixing up Mike Richards double penalty with Brad Richards.

The depths of summer and the dearth of defensemen. Here is a snapshot of the NHL blueliners that are "top 6 quality" and either available as UFA or have trade rumors about their availability:

Left Defense
Noah Hanifin 1 x $4,950,000 - Calgary
Matt Grzelcyk 1 x $3,687,500 - Boston
Marco Scandella 1 x $3,275,000 - St. Louis
Caleb Jones UFA -
Nick Holden UFA -
Alex Edler UFA -
Jake Gardiner UFA - (injury recovery?)

Right Defense
Erik Karlsson 4 x $11,500,000 - San Jose (with retention expected)
Brett Pesce 1 x $4,025,000 - Carolina
Colton Parayko 4 x $6,500,000 - St. Louis
Justin Faulk 4 x $6,500,000 - St. Louis (probably only one of STL RD but not both)
Matt Dumba UFA (~$4-5 million AAV)
Connor Murphy 3 x $4,400,000 - Chicago
Dante Fabbro 1 x $2,500,000 - Nashville
Andrew Peeke 3 x $2,750,000 - Columbus
Jeff Petry 2 x $6,250,000 - Pittsburgh
Ethan Bear UFA (shoulder injury)
Tyler Myers 1 x $6,000,000 - Vancouver (yes he is placed here to separate Bear from TDA).
Tony Deangelo UFA (Philly buyout)
Calen Addison RFA - Minnesota
Phillipe Myers 1 x $1,400,000 - Tampa Bay (got to figure they would move him if they could instead of $250k penalty to bury him again).
Cal Foote UFA

Aside from any movement creating more ripples in the market, there are currently RD openings in Carolina, Minnesota, Anaheim, and possibly Dallas.
For LD there aren't any obvious ones with maybe Chicago (depends upon Vlasic/Roos/Korchinski plan).
