I’d probably take quite a bit less overall cash, but get all the side perks negotiable like paid in signing bonus, full nmc, the term that fit my age, so I could sign another one and not be stuck in limbo like a ufa at 34, and any other things that are negotiated privately - private jet use in the off-season, access to private luxury home communities, improvements to facilities, etc.

In the hard cap world, this would give a better team.

Winning teams make money, endorsements, future earnings, popularity making the transition from the nhl to the next job easy and lucrative, etc.

If a group of players did this, and that owner was able to reduce the costs of those perks by doing them en masse, it would become a team everybody wanted to play for and everybody would be richer than if they pushed max dollars on one contract.

Ultimately the owner would spend the same amount of money, give or take, but their franchise value would skyrocket.
