Ottawa: Gets off easy here. In the offseason Montreal got a 1st round pick for taking on 1 year of Sean Monahan, here Ottawa only had to trade a 2nd for 2 YEARS of a terrible player.
Chicago: Gets picks for taking on salary. I think they could've gotten more, but good picks are good picks.

I'm thinking Chicago just bit the bullet and did the deal because they'd rather the 2nd + 4th than nothing at all. Also there's a chance they can revive his career and actually get something for him at the TD. Ristolainen got a 1st + so it's not out of the question.

I know it was Stan Bowman but Chicago also bit hard on Tyler Johnson with term only getting a 2nd from TB. Its certainly better than sitting on your hands with all that cap space and needing to hit the floor next season but i cant help but to think leverage here came into play as it always does and the return reflected that. Kinda amazing how Kent Hughes has always been able to master that leverage, hell, he somehow got Darnell Nurse that 9.25M AAV from Ken Holland as a agent.

Considering the buyouts they already have and now Ottawa in a bad year, picking high in a good draft, has had to deal a 2nd and a 3rd and eat retention to get rid of murray and zaitsev. Ouch

Zaitsev's contract spans 2-years. If you want a long-term piece, you need to get rid of those contracts.

Chicago wins, they have the upside with Zaitsev and worst case scenario can bite the bullet.

Something tells me Pinto/Debrincat extensions are coming soon and they won't be cheap

I think Tampa was able to make that trade because Johnson actually looked good in the 2021 playoffs. I remember thinking how lucky they were that happened, that he had gone from being nearly impossible to get rid of to where somebody might actually want him. Based on that playoff performance, Bowman probably thought that he could be a decent top-6 forward with more ice time in Chicago. I guess he was wrong, but I wouldn’t be surprised if there were other teams willing to jump in if Bowman had asked for more.
