Meier gets less than the DeBrincat return, Meier isn't getting anywhere near that kind of return. Especially not with a $10,000,000 QO hanging over his head.

leafs wont trade their 2nd best defensemen, best forward prospect, best defensive propspect and a 1st in a deep draft for someone who they wouldn't be able to afford to re-sign.

If the Bruins offered Pastarnak for that package, or the Canucks offered Pettersson, then the Leafs would accept. But Meier is not the caliber of player who can command a return that includes a young stud defenceman, a highly touted Finnish defenceman, a power forward who is a Hobey Baker nominee, and, oh, a 1st round pick, too. Dubas may do some goofy things at times but he's not stupid.

I don't think you can retain on only part of his deal. Which makes a sign and trade almost impossible in season.

It’s pretty standard for teams of non playoff teams to demand outlandish returns for their trade deadline moves. Must be better to dream how great the team could be in the future, rather than focus on how bad it is today. But you can do better - ‘Nucks fans have the delusional return niche completely filled this year anyway

Folks keep trying to force Meire on the Leafs.....and they don't have the cap for him (extension) without dismantling their team. That's why Meier to the Leafs or really virtually any contender doesn't make cap sense this TDL. Now in the summer when teams have figured out their cap. But why give up so many young cheap assets for an expensive RFA signing, when that cap could be spend on a UFA, and the young assets are retained.
