Major 9 Player Trade With Philly
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Ryno122</b></div><div>There isn’t a single player coming from Philly that is worth losing our 1st, Robbie and our top defensive prospect over</div></div>
Laughton is worth a 1st.
Risto can slot in on the second pair next year, when the Leafs most likely will try to sign Tanev in UFA to play with Rielly.
And Hathaway is the perfect 4th liner.
With this move the Leafs get out of the Kampf and Reaves contracts which is also worth something.
It's a good deal for the Leafs.

Iginla knows math if Conroy doesn't. That's not an excuse. Good GMs figure it out.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Ledge_And_Dairy</b></div><div>Call it what you want but the fact is that Sharangovich is much younger than Toffoli. And Toffoli probably isn't re-signing in New Jersey either. Did we lose that trade? Sure maybe I think if Sharangovich wasn't signed to such a short deal then maybe not. He's played well and has had similar production to guys like Palat at the same age. Trading away players who don't want to be there is not a bad thing at all, especially when they cause a scene like Zadorov did. The fact that Backlund had to literally sit down and have a 1 on 1 talk with Z, telling him to stop with the noise says a lot on how it was effecting the team</div></div>
Who cares how it was effecting the team, since half of them will be shipped out anyways. Flames are entering a rebuild/retool so players should not be dictating trades. This again speaks to Conroy bending to the players, which Dubas did in Toronto, and look at how that turned out.
The fact is Conroy lost both trades.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Ledge_And_Dairy</b></div><div>Lol this is what they call not being able to see the forest for the trees.
Toffoli demanded a trade when they said they weren't doing extension talks. Calgary got the best offer they could in a buyers market while also getting 6 years younger. I like Toffoli a lot but signing another 30+ player to an extension was not the play.
Zadorov also demanded a trade and there was locker room issues. Not to mention they didn't retain a penny in a market where no one had cap space. That allowed the team to become cap compliant and start accruing cap space.
Now that the team is able to accrue cap space they are able to accommodate trades. Calgary is also not in any rush to make trades now either</div></div>
Excuses.
They should have traded both at this year's trade deadline when teams would be lining up for both.
Conroy dealt them too early and accomodated their trade requests. He seems like a player friendly GM, like Dubas, and guys like that make losing trades every time.
I feel sorry for Flames fans. You guys are going into a rebuild with a rookie GM. Leafs fans know how much harm a rookie GM can cause a franchise.

No, he's not available.
Lindholm is a good option but he's going to likely cost more.

That's why you pay big money to goalies and not wingers like the Leafs.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>OK, by that logic, it's just the Rangers, Bruins have the only chance of being Cup Finalists from the East.</div></div>
And that logic is sound.
Last year Florida got lucky that Boston slipped up and handed the momentum to them after going 3-1 in that series. I don't think Florida can repeat their magical run from last year.
Tampa is no longer the team that went to three straight finals. Their roster got weaker, they got rid of guys like Killorn, Palat, Colton, McDonagh. Their depth has suffered. And Vasi was leaking goals against the Leafs last year.
Carolina and Jersey are also not serious cup contenders. Carolina has the best chance outside of Boston and New York but they lack the goaltending and don't produce enough offense.
New York and Boston are the most complete teams and they have the best goaltending in the East.
The Leafs don't even belong in the conversation.

Selling At The Deadline For A Change
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>GMBL</b></div><div>Barrie was let go for free and he was replaced by Brodie for free. Hyman was offered a deal but he didn't sign it, so you can think of it as him indefinitely sitting out while he was a ufa. Instead of paying Hyman 5M+, he was replaced for free with Bunting at 950K. Bunting was let go for free and was replaced by Bertuzzi for free. You know when you lose guys to free agency, you can sign others in their place potentially, right?
Maybe you just want Nylander to be one of your ex-Leafs so that you can finally be a fan of his and talk about how management let him go for free?</div></div>
You lose chemistry, camaraderie, and team spirit when you replace guys every year at free agency. And what do you think it's going to happen if Nylander signs for 11 million? Every year Leafs will have to go bargain bin hunting to replace guys around the core four.
A team is not just four players. Until Leafs management figure that out they won't win anything in spring.

Sandin was traded for a 1st, so if they have nothing to show for it then why would you suggest they do the same with a much better player than all the guys you listed?</div></div>
Those players could have and should have been retained because they weren't demanding 11 million and didn't sit out the start of a season while they were RFA.
Hyman was let go for free, Kadri was given away for a lesser player and a D who wasn't retained, etc, etc. It just speaks to the mismanagement of this team during the Matthews era.

It already is that under the current management. Hyman, Moore, Marchment, Sandin, Brown, Bunting, Kadri, so many players, picks and prospects gone, with nothing to show for it.
Giving Nylander an 11 million deal would be a big mistake. You commit big money to centers, defencemen, and goalies, not wingers.

You don’t wait for years and sell off valuable pieces cause you don’t know how the future will work out - you take your chance now. Just get into the playoffs and anything can happen. Every team believes that. But the WORST thing you can do is overreact like this and start making ridiculous moves for the future when your core is built to take the chance to win now.
You have the fan perspective, not the GM or management one.</div></div>
This is not an overreaction. And it's Shanahan and Treliving who are operating from a fan's perspective.

You would lose the trust of the players and have a hard time signing free agents if you start selling when the team has a chance to win</div></div>
This team has zero chance to win in April. And this is not a complete tear down. And those picks can be flipped at next year's deadline if the Leafs are in a position to contend.
They are simply not good enough right now to buy at the deadline. And I don't see Nylander signing for anything less than 11 million so why not trade him?
