Quoting: habs_need_Scoring
I get KK has move value cuz he is still young with more upside. But he hasnt put together a full season with the same offseason output as Dvorak, and although KK has improved defensively and in the faceoff circle he isnt on Dvorak's level. and he may not disappear cuz he can throw a few hits and impact that game but he regularly goes stretch of 5+ without getting on the score sheet, and 2 assists in 14 playoff games was by far his worse playoff performance to date. at 4.8 mil per he may be a steal by the time hes 24-25, but Canes could also be paying a hefty price for a career 3c.
But ya all moot cuz of course thats a trade that will never happen regardless of price, dont see the canes-habs wanting to work together even with new management.
Carolina actively employ Jordan Staal as their 3C. 4.8 for a 3C isn't bad in the slightest, if he can produce. But Kotkaniemi doesn't have to put up points to show he's excellent. This is the Jordan Staal arguement. He can have hands made of stone, if he's one of the best defensive players in the league (I'm referring to Staal here) then that's how he needs to contribute to the team. As for right now, KK and Dvorak had similar statlines and Kotkaniemi did that in a 4th line role. If you take Kotkaniemi's time at C and compare it to Dvorak, it's not close. He was putting up points per 60 numbers similar to MacKinnon at one point as a center. His issue was that his linemates became a revolving door of Martinook, Stepan and Lorentz on one side and Necas or Domi on the other. When he was given an elevated role (3 times he played top six minutes this season as a center) he had 3 multipoint games. Yes, his playoff performance wasn't great, but a 14 game sample size isn't enough to say he was bad. At this moment in time, Kotkaniemi is the better player. He's better defensively and in the dot than Dvorak (who's not a natural center, which would explain this), he's more physical, more versitile, and he only had 4 less games playing on the 2nd PP unit of a meh powerplay and bottom line 5v5 time on ice whereas Dvorak played top PP time and top six minutes. I don't think this is close.
But you're right, it is unlikely we will see anything like this come to fruition
