If Guerin had his choice from these assets I’d have to think he’d ask for Räty + 13oa or Wahlstrom + 13oa. I understand most Isles fans probably don’t like those packages but they seem like the guys Guerin would be interested in.

I wouldn’t do either of those. I’d do 13+any of the other guys in the trade though

Yeah if they want Raty or Wahlstrom I wouldn't' do it. Most I would give up is pick 13, 2022 2nd, and holmstrom

As a neutral fan I think that any combo other than 1st + Raty or Wahlstrom gets outbid by someone else, but that either of those would be pretty fair value and around what I expect MN to get back. For the Isles side you are crazy to not do either of those IMO. Raty and Wahlstrom's best case scenarios have them being maybe as good as fiala in ~ 4 years, most likely neither one of them ends up above a point per game at any time in their career.

wahlstrom is enough. 13OA and a roster player is enough. not a penny more. nobody is giving them more. Devils arent for sure.

Wahlstroms 20-21 season was at worst equal to Fialas. Obviously Fiala was miles better than Wahlstrom this past season, but I’d bet Wahlstroms age 23-25 seasons will be better than Fiala’s 27-29 seasons. Fiala has likely peaked, although he’s still going to be a great player moving forward. Trading pick 13 and Wahlstrom for Fiala would be a fireable offense.

Isles players constantly get undervalued. 5 years ago everyone was saying isles would be crazy not to give up Pulock and Sorokin for Duchene.

In what way was Wahlstrom's 20-21 season "at worst equal to Fialas" lol. Don't get me wrong Wahlstrom will be a good player and better than he showed last year, where he was pretty bad, but not every first round pick turns into a > ppg player like Fiala is. Also fireable offenses would be giving Pageau and Palmieri multi-year 5 million deals with NTCs, or signing the ghosts of Zdeno Chara and Zach Parise, or getting rid of Toews for two seconds.

I laughed pretty hard when 13oa+Wahlstrom was considered a fire able offense. If 13oa+Räty/Wahstrom aren’t on the table, NYI won’t get fiala. It’s as simple as that, they will be outbid. .

Wahlstrom was better than Fiala in plenty of advanced metrics during the 20-21 season, including goals above replacement, wins above replacing , and standing points above replacement .

Pageau’s contract isn’t bad and Parise was a 3-4 mill dollar player last season so im not sure why you’re bringing him up. Chara I agrees and Toews you’re 100 right. It doesn’t get talked about enough that “hall of fame coach” Barry Trotz pushed for Toews to get traded because he thought Leddy was the better player

It makes no sense for the isles to give up pick 13 and Wahlstrom for Fiala when Wahlstrom has the perfect skillset to compliment Barzal and Fiala wants 8+ mill on a long term deal. I’d rather draft Lambert/Yurov/Nazar and keep Wahlstrom over trading for Fiala.

I’d give up pick 13 for Fiala, but that and Wahlstrom is insane.

Trust me as a caps fan Trotz gets wayyyyyy more credit than he should for just about everything, literally if one lucky deflection in game 3 vs CBJ in 2018 goes the other way the caps get swept in round 1, have no cup, and Trotz remains one of the biggest chokers in NHL history.

Once again I understand why Wahlstrom is a good player and going to be a good player in the future, but Fiala has IMO demonstrated this past year that he is a star in the NHL, of which there are very few. Wahlstrom could turn out to be that player in 2/3/4 years, but he could not -- think of someone like Burakovsky, who had a similar draft pedigree and put up similar numbers to Wahlstrom his first two years in the NHL, who never really broke through and has only this year broken the 50 point mark. Fiala is the real deal right now and is only 25 himself.

I also get Fiala at that price not making sense for the Islanders because of cap space / need to restock prospects / going to rebuild / positional fit / whatever other external factors go into how a team builds their roster. But, to dismiss it out of hand as a massive payment or fireable offense is pretty laughable, especially when worse players in similar situations such as JT Miller or Sam Reinhart got pretty similar returns.

Right after Burakovsky got traded to Colorado he broke out. He was on pace for 63 + 68 points during the 19-20 and 20-21 seasons, let’s not use the 50 pts to Measure his impact, those were Covid shortened seasons.

But for the islanders, it is a massive payment and a fireable offense. J.T Miller returned a 1st rd pick and Reinhart returned a late 1st and a solid goalie prospect. The islanders are giving up a mid 1st and a player they see as a top line compliment to Barzal. I would have no problem giving up pick 13 and a B prospect , if that gets outbid then it is what it is. Fiala is a great player but he’s not a guy who’s worth giving up an early pick and a top prospect/young player , especially when he’s entering his age 26 season and wants to be paid like a star. Forwards prime years are usually 22-27 YO for the most part.

If the Islanders gave up what other fans thought they should give up for players on the market over the last 5 years, they wouldn’t have Pulock, Sorokin, Barzal or Dobson.

Thats just not true. I agreed with everything you said until you got to miller and reinhart.
We'll start with reinhart, he returned devon levi and a top 10 protected 1st which was likely to be a mid 20s pick. Keep in mind levi was 1 year removed from being a 7th round pick and at that point really only had a great world juniors on a dominant canada team to point to.
Jt miller, he got back a top 16 protected 1st and a 3rd plus marek mazanec. The pick ended up being 20oa. To say fiala is worth 13oa and wahlstrom based on those packages is crazy.

If the Wild wont take pick 13 and a 2nd pick, then yeah the islanders wont be acquiring him. There comes a point where you have to say no even if you want the player. Fiala is great, but not good enough to give up pick 13 and a forward who woll be a top line player within the next 2 seasons.

The islanders wanted Mat Duchene 5 years ago, but the Avs wanted Pulock ,Sorokin , and a 1st or Barzal, Hamonic and a 1st. Ottawa overpaid and they faced the consequences.
