Louder for the people in the back
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>JayTea</b></div><div>You know as well as I do that if we traded Rossi, Fiala, and the picks used for Lambos and Wallstedt, the Sabres would have formed a core that goes on to win 4 Stanley Cups with those players and Eichel would have never been the same post surgery. It's the Minnesota sports way.</div></div>
Lol, maybe. We traded up to get Wallstedt, we can't say the Sabres would have done the same, but even knowing the we took Wallstedt I'd still make that deal in hindsight. We were losing Fiala anyways, Rossi is still a huge question mark, and Lambos looks fine but probably is a bottom pairing guy in the NHL. I'll take the 24 year old PPG center.

Louder for the people in the back
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>MNBassman</b></div><div>Was it his shoulder that scared the Wild away?
BTW - I would much prefer the Wild miss the playoffs in order to add one more high end player plus other parts to their cupboard! I know next year’s draft is loaded with defensemen, so maybe they could get a future legit #1 RHD too. I still don’t think a team NEEDS a #1 center if they have 3 #2s, but I do think they need a true workhorse on the backend to shut down the teams that do have a #1 center.</div></div>
From what I remember, it was a combination of things. Cap, the neck injury where he wanted to get a surgery that hadn't been used much for athletes, there were rumors he was bad in the locker room (which now seem to have been false), and the apparent unwillingness to give up a better package than what Buffalo got. On that last point, I think we absolutely could and should have offered a haul. That offseason before he was moved, we had two first round picks in the draft, Rossi, and Fiala. I wouldn't be too upset with having lost all those assets.
I'm sort of with you on missing the playoffs. We have a deep pool, but right now there aren't really any prospects that have a good shot at becoming a legitimate star player - especially on defense. I just think Guerin is going to do whatever he can to get us into the tournament if we are in the mix at the trade deadline.

Cap is extremely tight. I don't feel great about this roster outside of Kaprizov, Ek, Boldy, Brodin, and Faber, and it's almost impossible to make any moves to improve. I wouldn't be all that surprised if we missed the playoffs this season to be honest - unless Rossi has a huge breakout season. Thankfully we'll have a lot more flexibility next offseason with Zucc, Foligno, and Fleury coming off the books, but to be a broken record: we still need a #1 center that can score. To play revisionist history, the cap would have been a nightmare to figure out, but I think missing out on Eichel was a huge mistake.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ClockReads2113</b></div><div>You could if you move out one of MAF or Foligno. Forgot you all have so much dead space. Just brutal.</div></div>
You aren't wrong but I just don't see Guerin doing that. Fleury claims he wants to be here (and it's implied he wouldn't waive his NMC) and with losing Dumba in free agency I think Guerin will want to keep Foligno as a vocal leader. Kuzy is skilled but I have a feeling Dean would hate his game so much he'd make him sit in the press box half the season.
This year is the last year it really hurts, next year we have a ton of cap coming off the books with presumably a bunch of ELC players to call up and the year after that the Parise/Suter dead cap is a lot lower. I bet we'll extend Zuccarello next offseason but he shouldn't cost too much.

Rossi is worth far more to the front office than what we would ever get in a trade for him. I don't see us moving him unless he's used as a chip to finally get a 1C, and this trade does not accomplish that.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Hockey_Soul</b></div><div>They are about to be especially nasty, but I think adding Lindholm will hurt the team's cap structure and prevent them from being able to lock up young talent.
No way does CBJ take that MIN trade. Boq has more value than that, and what Foligno brings isn't needed right now. Also, that move forcing them to put Gud on the 2nd pair would hurt the defense. If Boq <em>IS</em> moved out, I think it'll be because Jiricek has taken his job.</div></div>
Agreed, Boqvist should return more than this. I don't think it makes sense for either team. We <em>do</em> need what Foligno brings and we already have Addison who fills the same role as Boqvist.

I'd be shocked if we did anything <em>but</em> nothing. Would be nice to clear some cap but with Goligoski refusing to move his NMC and the unlikelihood Foligno and MAF will be traded, that only really leaves Merrill.
I'd love to find a way to get Nylander since we could actually afford an extension for him next year, but it's almost impossible to fit him in this year.

First Look Minnesota Wild 2023
Duhaime will probably get traded. I imagine Guerin would love to sing him for that, but sounds like he wants more money and we just don't have the space to make that happen.
I hope Rossi gets a shot in the top 6 on the 2nd line with Johansson and Boldy. We need to see what he can do and putting him with Gaudreau and Foligno isn't doing him any favors to develop offensively.
I don't really love the plan this year. We aren't contenders and I'd rather punt and try to get a high pick next year to continue stocking the pool, but Guerin seems determined to make the playoffs.
We certainly did target forwards in the draft this year, taking 3 centers in the first 63 picks. I've long questioned why we haven't been prioritizing center in our prospect pool when it has been such a need for us, but the front office definitely addressed that this year. Time will tell on these kids, but we really need someone to develop into a 1C.

The 5
According to <a href="https://theathletic.com/4646001/2023/06/27/nhl-draft-first-round-trades/" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">The Athletic</a>, their beat writer doesn't see them trading outside of the top 8, but I'd love if we could swing big and get 5OA. Don't think we'd be willing to part with the assets it would take though (probably Boldy). Rossi doesn't have the type of value he used to.

The Kaprizov Experiment
Appreciate the creativity, but I don't see us moving an established player like Kaprizov for a pick - even if the assumption is that whoever we take at 3 would be a star NHL'er.
I actually think Anaheim is a better partner for this than Columbus. Columbus is in a similar spot to the Wild in terms of centers and 3OA gives them the opportunity to fix that problem. Anaheim already has Zegras and McTavish, do they really need Fantilli...? They could definitely use a winger for Zegras, though, and Kaprizov would be perfect. They also have the cap space to absorb his contract.

I'd love if we could move up to get one of those 3, specifically Moore or Danielson, but I don't see us giving up Gustavsson to do it. Addison might be the chip we use to try and do something like that.

we should be all over Lindholm situation
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>MNBassman</b></div><div>I hate the idea of trading futures for Lindholm! In fact I think trading for any older player needing a new contract is a poor way to run a franchise . The problem is, because you just traded so much to acquire the player, you are forced to resign him for too much and too long because the player’s agent has ALL the leverage. Look at Huberdeau’s contract after the big trade. The last thing the Wild need is to find themselves in cap hell again with bad contracts and fading players. They will probably have one in the future when they resign Kaprizov…so trading for Lindholm is playing with fire too much for my liking. I want the Wild (almost) always trading aging players for younger players, not the other way around. This is how you manage the cap for the long haul and stay competitive for the long haul too! Bottom line, I would only trade for aging players if I am swapping aging players to get them or if the previous team eats a ton of salary. Carolina is the team emulate, not the way the Wild did business under morons like Risebrough and Fletcher for 20 years…</div></div>
I generally agree, if he were 26 it would be a different story. My concern is that Kaprizov won't want to stick around once his contract is up if we don't have a legitimate 1C centering him and we'll be where we were 3 years ago.
I guess at this point I'm so sick of waiting for one of our prospects to finally turn into a 1C that I wouldn't hate something like this and I'm not as convinced as I was that Rossi will stick at center in the NHL. What I'd really like Guerin to do is trade up into the top 10 at the draft and take a center, but I'd be surprised if we did something like that.

Jets Fans What Do You Think
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CowSaysMoo</b></div><div>Fair enough. Good luck to him getting $9M from a destination of his choice.</div></div>
If he can give some assurance he won't hold out for a trade to Montreal in a couple years I'd be fine paying him in the $8-8.5M AAV range assuming we can make the cap work. That probably means trading Zuccarello, which would piss off Kaprizov, but maybe getting him a bona fide 1C helps soften the blow? I imagine Zucc would be open to coming back next offseason too. I dunno, 24 year old 1C's don't go on the market every day and I'm not convinced Rossi will stick at center in the NHL so if we have to overpay a bit (again assuming we can make the cap work) I don't think it's the end of the world.

If what The Athletic is reporting is true (it generally is), then I have a hard time believing he'd sign this. If you're looking to get him around $6M your best bet is for him to sign his qualifying offer at $6M, but that walks him right into UFA next offseason where he'd most likely sign in Montreal.
